I installed windows 8.1 on a laptop. To install necessary stuff,I plugged my external hard drive. However no exe file could be run anymore.
In shock, I even plugged the drive to my old PC. But no exe file works anymore. On old PC nothing appears after double clicking the exe. On the new laptop ".......has stopped working" error appears.
Please help.
I cannot even open direct x installer.
I think it has to do with windows defender but I disabled it after it says malware or something when I plugged my drive.

Hi there Marchamp,

In case there is other data(non .exe one) stored on the drive, I would advise you to back it up as soon as possible as there may be something wrong with the drive.
Can you run the files after you transfer them to your computer first? If this is the case, you can just transfer them all to your computer and reformat the drive.
In case the .exe files can't be opened on your computer as well, then I guess you can run a Disk Check: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
In case this sorts the issue out, you need to back up the rest of your data(.exe files). After that, you can just download some brand specific HDD testing tool and test the drive. The results will show the overall health status of the...

Thank u. The compressed exe files (zip, rar) work after unzipping them. However the rest exe files had to be deleted. I am backing up my data now for formatting. Thank u for your attention.
