my mobo has two PCIE slots, but the second one is only x8, not x16.
is it worth getting another HD7850 and crossfiring?
or, as I suspect, will a better single card have more effect?
I'm not looking to upgrade just yet, just thinking ahead.

Solution
WIth the exception of the very high-end enthusiast motherboards (X99), all SLI capable motherboards are like this. Not to worry, only if you're running SLI Titan X cards (and maybe not even then) would there be any loss of performance.

Of course, what course of action you should consider depends on your budget and your current hardware.
