I just assembled my new PC about a week ago, everything was fine for a few days, crossfire was working (i made sure of that) then it started crashing/freezing while playing games. After a few resets i went into device manager at first it showed the 2nd GPU as not working (Error code 43). Then after restarting my computer it didn't appear at all in the device manager. I've tried reinstalling the driver and I tested each GPU to see if they both worked (they do). I have no idea what the problem could be, please help

My specs:
Asus Z87-A (NFC Express Edition) ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
2 MSI Radeon R9 290 4GB TWIN FROZR Video Cards
EVGA 850W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor
2 Crucial 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Windows 7 64Bit OS

It's Crossfire, not SLI, and I don't think a bridge is needed in this case. I believe it communicates via the PCIe bus.

1) Try each card for at least 30 minutes in a benchmark loop (3DMark series, Unigine valley benchmark etc)
- top slot only

2) Repeat for 2nd GPU slot.

3) Install both cards but downclock GPU and VRAM by 10% then test in same benchmark loop. If this passes then there's likely one of two causes:
a) One card was overheating (two cards adds more heat than one), or
b) Power Supply is being stressed too much. While it SHOULD be fine that doesn't mean it's working properly.

4) Still problems?
Possible software issue. You reinstalled the drivers so not much I could suggest aside from reinstalling Windows though that's a last resort.

**If you have a spare drive then perhaps try installing Windows 10 as that's pretty easy:
a) Go to W10 site, download latest 64-bit ISO
b) Burn ISO to DVD or thumb drive (use Rufus for thumb drive)
c) BOOT to the install media and install Windows to the spare drive
d) Install AMD drivers
e) Install benchmark and now restest.

Update:
While you are at it:
1) Update BIOS if newer exists
2) Make sure "XMP" is selected and save (memory profile)
3) run MEMTEST www.memtest.org
4) run CPU diagnostic https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit-
5) Uninstall video drivers then run an AMD cleanup utility. Not sure of the best one.

First: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx

Then: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Then: install latest AMD drivers

OK so i was changing out the gpus and testing each port when i found out that a power cord that i plugged into the back of the PSU wasnt supply power to the gpu (only the fan) so i switched it out for a different cord and now my gpu shows up in my device manager and crossfire is enabled!
