I'm planning on upgrading my gpu from the GTX 690 to the Titan x in order to get into 4k gaming, I've been waiting for the witcher 3 release to do this. My question is what kind of hardware is needed to run witcher 3 at 60fps in 4k. I know the game is not yet released but any opinion to what might be needed from people who know this stuff way better then me is very much appreciated.

My current build is
i73930k
16gb Ram
GTX 690 (Upgrading to titan x)
Corsair PSU 800w
Windows 7 64

With the only planned upgrade going from the gtx 690 to the single titan x

Any opinions on the upgrade the card itself (titan x) or any other hardware I might need to achieve 60fps on 4k ultra would be appreciated.

thanks

60 FPS at 4K would probably be more achievable with two 980's in SLI than one Titan X.

I'm not entirely sure about how compatible the Titan X or the two 980s would be with the i7 3930k, but I think it would be okay.

Also, what corsair PSU specifically? Corsair has some awesome PSU's and some so-so ones.

EDIT: I've never played witcher although I've heard of it, and not all games are SLI-friendly but most are.

Ive had seemingly bad luck with SLI compatibility, which is one of the reasons I was switching to the single GPU with high capabilities. Which lead me to the Titan X. I believe my power supply is the GS800, I am not home and am not positive as I purchased it when I built it 3 years ago. Compatibility with my CPU is a issue I should look into but I've sen a few people with setups using a titan x and a 3930k. I think witcher is not SLI friendly. By going with a titan I also leave it open to purchase a second titan eventually. I just am trying to gauge what to expect performance wise if I upgrade to the titan X. thanks for your response and look forward to any more opinions you may have.
Thanks

Okay, then going with the Titan would probably be better.

There are probably more knowledgeable guys on here than me with the Titan (I've never used it, only drooled over it; I'm a video editor, so I have to prioritize CPU and a billion hard drives over GPU for the $$$ sigh...).

However, something to consider might be dropping both Intel and Nvidia support a email asking them specifically about compatibility and any bottlenecks you might experience using the two. They might be able to point you to some little-known resource out there with benchmarks, testing, etc specifically on that? Worth 2 minutes of time for a shot.

thanks, that's some good advice. Im going ot shoot them an email and see if they have heard of any issues. Or any resources that could help answer my questions.

Another question I had was about 4k monitors themselves and finding a good one for gaming, if you have any information on 4k monitors please let me know as it seems there is not too much out there to look as far as finding a great perfomring 4k monitor 27in
thanks again,
Andrew

Good luck on the emails. I've had some terrible generic responses, and I've had some actually insightful responses. Just kinda hit or miss with customer support it seems, lol.

The only 27 inch 4k monitor I know of that isn't crazy expensive is this:

But if you have a bigger budget then definitely get something better than a 6ms GTG and preferably with real 4K resolution option (4096 x 2160) so that movies in 4k look better on it too.

You'll know by now that the gtx 980ti is out. I would definitely look into getting the 980ti over the Titan X with the posability of sli the 980ti in the future.
Your rig is identical to mine (i7 3930K, 16 gig and gtx 690. I have an Alienware Aurora R4) but I'll be sticking with my 690. 4K isn't such a big deal for me at the moment. I haven't played a game yet that my 690 struggles with in 1080 and I don't think the small difference in performance between a 690 and 980ti is worth the investment. Even my sons i7 2600, 8gig ram and gtx 760 plays every AAA game in 1080 without a problem.
If money is no problem I would look into sli two 980TI's rather than a Titan X, but personal I'm going to wait for the next gen of gpu's after the gtx 900 series (and wait for intels Skylake) before I consider buying a new rig.

I actually went with the titan x, It has been incredible, performance wise. I ended up going with the Acer Predator @1440p and 144hz it is an absolutely amazing gaming experience. These two upgrades have made tremendous impact for the gaming experience. Playing bf4 feels like a new game and my brief foray about an hr in withcer 3, looked stunning and ran smooth as butter. I am a performance enthusiast too. So I second guess and research and ask a ton. I really wanted to go single card this time but now I am thinking of going for a second titan x in a few months. I am extremely happy with my decision and don't regret it now reading on the 980ti even. The only thing I would agree with is possibly waiting for the next generation of gpu's.

i would have suggested a GTX 980Ti as it is only 1 step below a TITAN X and neither have that double precision thing that well supported anyhow which made the TITAN series different from the normal GeForce cards

Well now seeing the hard numbers on the 980ti, I probably would have gone in that direction. Seeing as I can't exchange my titan x to newegg, I'll have to suck up the $350 extra I spent to get very little extra increase in power. I knew eventually this would happen but now a cpl weeks after getting my card.
