Wanting to get a 3rd party Router/Modem

Hi,

So I currently have Fiber broadband with BT and use the HomeHub 5 which is.... not very good. It drops connections and I have to reset it for the wireless to be picked up every now and then.

Anyway I have been told to get a 3rd party modem, I have been looking round and realised I have no idea what I am looking for, are they just a case of plug and play? Do I need to do anything special to get it working?

Also what are the best brands? TP Link? Netgear? ASUS?

Any help would be appreciated.

My PC works fine as it is wired, no issues at all with that.

Every device that is used wirelessly though does drop out, that is phones, tablets, anything.

Could it be to do with the HomeHub searching over the two bands i.e 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
