triple cf asus R9 290x vs sli gtx 980 vs titan X

thoughts on which of the above would be best? all will end up costing about the same. Keep in mind the possible update to make sli and cf add up vram so 2 4gb cards = 8gb total vram. thoughts?

well you need a good psu (MONEY!) to handle triple crossfire, prepare for big energy bills.

VRAM does not stack up in sli or crossfire, if the 290x has 4gb vram and you crossfire, you still have 4gb after crossfire.

Depends on if your playing at 1080p, 1440p, or 4k.

If 1080p/1440p i would recommend 980 sli or 970 sli, unless you get a really good price on the 290x.

At 4k probably the titan x because it has 12gb vram. The 980 sli does perform well at 4k, but the 4gb vram could be of concern in the future.

The DX12 rumors are throwing me.. i was going to go with a titan, but then i heard DX12 will launch in june with stack compatability for sli and CF. Based on in game benchmarking the 980 sli destroys the titan in most respects as it should. however if the DX12 promise doesnt come to be true, then id be hitting the 4gb roof....

"Though it says DX12, this probably won't have much effect on GDDR5 cards. SLI/Crossfire currently use alternate frame rendering (GPUs alternate turns to draw frames) by mirroring a copy of what is stored in VRAM on each graphics card so that each GPU doesn't have to request textures from the VRAM of a separate graphics card. If you want to stack VRAM, you need a very high bandwidth link to provide textures from one graphics card to the GPU of another card. This is only possible to fully realize with 3D-stacked HBM on the R9 300 series. Current GDDR5 cards may benefit a little, but it'll more likely than not suffer from bandwidth choking."

I am also considering SLIng for precisely this reason. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the 3,5GB VRAM issue. I soo hope the rumors are true.

GTX980TI should be out around the time the R9 390X is out Both cards are for Pure 4K gaming titan X is more than a gaming card so money will be wasted

(not cost efficient as getting a GTX980TI Basically the gaming version of the titan X in SLI or a R9 390X Crossfire)

also afaik XDMA Crossfire scales well even with 3 cards

so based on that the real world application even with DX12 on a multiscreen display (lets say 2 screens (with a third not running the game)) sli 980's would fall behind due to bottle necking in key areas? and therefore the titan would take the advantage as a more universal and rewliable option as i assume it would most likely benift hugely from the DX12 update. with of course the future option of adding a second titan IF stacking does become a reality.

but the concern i have is the limitations of 4GB vram... when future proofing is considered (espeacially when you look at the growth of games and their vram consumption) im quite concerned with the limitation of 4gb

I would wait for the GTX 980Ti or the 300 series from AMD, if you are concerned about vram.

8GB HBM with a 1024bit memory Bus with an insane amount of Bandwidth for the R9 390X the ''master race version'' comes with a CLC

GTX980TI 6GB of GDDR5 ram clearly the winner on bandwidth is AMD

but both have fast memory so we wont know the difference HBM makes other than smaller cards and less Power Consumption until they are both out

and it is a month away i would rather wait

If you have Windows 10, then you can utilize all the VRAM (I don't recommend WIndows 10 at all because it neutralizes caracked software until you buy the licensed one), but without DirectX 12 (the one that only Windows 10 supports), you still have effectively 4GB of VRAM; which is fine, because in 4K you just stop anti-aliasing at 4x, which doesn't even use all 4GB of VRAM. Thus I recommend R9 290 instead of 290X, because 290X is 290 with higher clock speed, whilst both having the same maximum overclocked performance. 290 with water cooling is far better than 290X. If you're yet to know much about water cooling, I can select the water components for you; in return, I need to know what case are you using
