Can you use a microphone from a headset, but have sound pay through speakers?

I want to get a headset for my pc, for skype/online gaming, but I'm basically going as cheap as possible, and don't want to have to use a really bad headset when I have my desktop speakers. Is it possible/simple to have sound play through the speakers while the microphone of a headset is still operational?

Yes, all you have to do is select the microphone on the headset as your recording device, and thats all there is to it. As for skype, you just have to select the mic in tools->options->audio settings
