Will adding 8gigs of RAM to my current 8 gigs work?

Hey guys,

At the moment I'm running with 2 sticks of 4gb 1600mhz ram. My motherboard supports up to 4 sticks in total.

Now I'm wondering if adding 2 more sticks of the exact same ram will work even though they weren't purchased at the same time. Also, will there be any drawbacks to using 4x4gb sticks instead of using like 2x8gb sticks?

My motherboard is an Asus Maximus vi hero
My CPU is a Intel Core i-7 4770k
And the specific ram I'm using is Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9

The reasons I'd like to upgrade are that when I'm gaming, running skype and a few tabs of chrome I tend to cap out at around 7 gigs of memory and I'd like a bit more headroom.
I'd also like performance increase when rendering videos and such.

Thanks in advance for any replies, the help is much appreciated <3

No drawbacks from using 2 sticks vs 4 sticks. Yes it should work if its the exact speed, though its often recommended to purchase a new kit of memory in the new total amount you want.

Short story is yes it should be fine, if you experience an issue you may need to return it and buy a new RAM kit of the appropriate size.

What you can do to be safe to is run Windows Memory test too or a like program to make sure there isn't a negative reason your RAM is filling up so much

There is a small drawback to using 4 sticks instead of 2. There will be a bit more load on your memory controller accessing two channels instead of one. This may translate to a slight knock on overclocking, but you wouldn't notice it in most respects.

I preformed the Windows Memory Diagnostic test and it showed that nothing was wrong with my current ram.
I think I'm going to go with adding 2 more sticks of my current ram just because it'll cost me 64 euros instead of getting a whole new kit which costs about double.

Thanks for the help !
