So it's old Tech (i5 2400) vs bad Tech (FX 4300) I was thinking of throwing in an Athlon 860K into the mix but if I'm gonna go AMD between the 860K and 4300 I thought it'd be a better idea to go for the one which has upgradability to an 8 core.

Both will land me around the same price including Motherboards.

Which is better for gaming? (I will be pairing it with a GPU around the R9 285 - 290 Mark)

Cheers.

Thank you very much,

Does anyone else have an opinion or anything to say on the matter?

The I5 is best, second is the 860k, and the 4300 is in last based on benchmarks and per core performance. The I5 does not destroy the 860k, what you should really consider is the FX-6300, its basically the same price as the 4300 here in the U.S. and is considerably better, especially with an overclock

4300 is £64, 6300 is almost £90 here, besides I'm not going to be overclocking anything.

Thank you for the help, I knew the i5 would be the best I just wanted to roughly know by what margin.

I5-2400 vs 860k, not a whole lot

the 860k is actually a decent little budget chip, granted, ZERO upgradability unless the last round of FM2+ holds some surprise no one knows about, it is quite good, I have the 750K and love it, a great cheap budget CPU, I put a 280x in there and it played GTA V very well on high settings.

The I5 has a much better upgrade path, you can theoretically go to an I7-3770k on an 1155, that kinda DESTROYS the 860k and is better than the best FX chips for gaming, but it still cost more.

Not really looking for upgradeability, I just thought between the 860K and 4300 the 4300 would make sense for that reason.

I'll be keeping the CPU for no longer than 3 years, then I'll be jumping on the latest intel flagship then. (I was gonna go brand new 4460 but didn't see the point)

To be fair, the 2400 is miles more powerful than the 860k.

Comparison between the i5 2400 and the A10-7850k (basically the 860k with the igpu):
