Intel i5 range is your best bet. You will need to upgrade your motherboard also if you currently do not have one that supports lga1150 socket CPUs. You can get a i5-4670k with a z97 mobo and overclock it for best performance.

So the budget you state is for the CPU only? If so, then for below 250 the i5 4690k that everyone is suggesting.

4690k has an unlocked multiplier so you can OC easily.
4460 and 4690 can be OCed but you have to increase the DRAM:BUS speed so you will need expensive ram also. Difference is stock clock speed.

Because Intel cpus are better performance per-Core than AMD FX. So a Quad-core i5 smokes the 8-core FX

To expand a bit on Muggle's answer- *most* games still only utilize 2 cores on a CPU, and most of that is on the primary core, so single core performance is still a pretty big thing when choosing a gaming CPU, and as he says the Intel chips generally rule in core to core comparisons.
