My copy of windows 7 is 2 days old. I powered it up Saturday night and installed all 196 pending updates. It took two and a half hours to update all that time's worth of Microsoft updates, but I was happy to do It because I know Microsoft barely releases updates for their older software. :D
I powered down and back up multiple times, no prior issues.

But now, I just shut down my computer and it claims there are 196 windows updates pending again! There was no change in hardware and there were no pending updates when I shut off multiple times before. It has been 20 minutes and it is at 13 out of 196 again still downloading. Windows is telling me not to shut down, but I don't want duplicates of all of these files! What should I do? I know for a fact that these are not legitimate, please help.

There must be something wrong with my hard drive not recognizing something. I had just created a new logical partition minutes earlier, could that be part of the issue? I did not overwrite system files or updates as far as I know. Quick answers (before it duplicates and installs all updates) would be great. Any and all answers are much appreciated.

"Word of warning... TAKE YOUR TIME with the updates. I've learned that if you try to do too many at one time... something can and will go wrong.. like updates hanging in your system or something from the Windows Control Panel not being able to open. So you may have to DESELECT a few of the updates and install them in groups instead of all at once. "

I have found that doing massive amount of updates actually makes it take longer. One update tries to install out of order and Windows will fail them all. I usually install 10 to 20 at a time until done. I also disable automatic updates after the fresh install and do manual updating until Windows Update no longer offers any. After that, I set it to do the automatic. Otherwise, the auto...

I just did a reinstall of Windows 7... and let me tell you... with my super fast internet connection it takes a full day to do all the updates... I usually get them done in two days.

You also must understand... that there are updates that will NOT show up or be displayed until certain other updates are first installed. So it's possible you still have a ton of new updates. What you should do is go to Windows Updates and perform a MANUAL SCAN for Updates to see everything that it detects...

Never had any of those problems youve listed installing Windows 7 at least, other versions of Windows had some issues years and years and years ago. If you are having that many issues with a Windows 7 install and update, you might want to look deeper into that.

It's also a good idea to wait to install GPU software/drivers until Windows is updated as the suite requires certain versions of .Net Framework. I usually install the Motherboard drivers and nothing else until Windows is fully updated.

Oh, okay that makes sense that windows wont detect certain updates until it is fully updated, but the original 196 updates have been installed for two days now, and I've shut down and restarted dozens of times since then. I was just weird that it is just detecting them now after days of nothing with a stable internet connection. I will try the Windows official update page scan later today, that is a great suggestion.

I am thinking this may be a precaution to spread out large groups of of updates for users into smaller chunks of 196 every 48 hours until the user is up to date. I just hope nothing is seriously wrong with my brand new build!:(

Both downloaded and installed in two separate processes. Took, more accurately, 3.5 hours.

Thanks for the response but not what I'm looking for exactly. I need to know if it is normal to update and install, then be prompted days later to update and install 196 updates again on a new computer ?( The same computer but brand new copy of windows).

Thank you for the advice on the video card drivers, but already installed the latest for my 250X:pt1cable: Did I mention I am using the windows automatic update right now not the manual website link?

I figured as much. The most efficient way (in my opinion) to get the updates done after an install, is manually. The automatic updates are great for maintenance, but for the initial install, it's not so great. You should consider turning it off and finishing up manually. Just keep running updates until it doesn't offer any more.
