i saw a video and it was comparing 980 to r9 290x and the 980 was like 20 celcius cooler does this mean it will last longer since it is a much cooler card? it was on load btw and if it draws more power does that mean my psu is more stressed

Solution
Mining crypto currencies, I have a shop that they ran in and they heated my house up here in Canada. Every 290 I had paid for itself 4x over and saved me lots in heating costs, but my point is they last, they were made to last at 95c. With aftermarket coolers, I don't see longevity being an issue.

Reliability of cards is just luck, some cards last longer than others because every card have slight differentiation in them. and yes if the card draws more power then the PSU is more stressed, but PSU are made to be put on stress, but not all the time though.

Also if your talking about how long the video card will last in terms of gaming, ill give you an example of the GTX 580, it still a pretty decent card to have even though it came out like 5 years ago, you can still game at 1080P with medium to high setting with it on new AAA games.

If I had an agenda, I could produce a video that showed just about anything I wanted. Those videos are to be taken very large grains of salt.

Have you seen similar reports elsewhere?

USAFRets, why the surprised reaction?

The R9 290X is known to run at high temperatures. I have one myself that also runs up to 92 degrees.

The NVidia Maxwell architecture GPU's typically don't exceed temps of 75 degrees depending on the non-reference model.

It is not strange, it is quite a formality between these GPU's.

It's not unusual.

ASUS MATRIX-GTX980-P-4GD5
Load: 60°C
OC Load: 61°C

ASUS ROG MATRIX-R9290X-P-4GD5
Load: 82°C
OC Load: 84°C

It all depends on which brands and models of cards are being compared.

It's not necessarily a 'surprise', it is the reliance on a youtube video.

What you are referring to has nothing to do with how well the cards perform. A gasoline engine runs hotter than a battery, but which do you think has more performance, a drag racer or an electric car?

So long as the card is operating within its normal temps, the card should last far longer than you'd ever want to use it for.

Well heat depends on the cooler, my tri x 290x's run much cooler then the numbers i've seen here. With room temp around 22c my top card doesn't hit 75c and my bottom is around 65c.

I have a bunch of reference 290's as well and they run hot, unless you don't mind a jet engine in your case. I had 16 290's mining for over a year 24/7 running about 80-85c with fan about 85%, and not one failed and all still work flawlessly.

ok i guess the answer was simple nvidia cards do run cooler but you can get amd with a more quality cooler and get a little bit better temps and if i go crossfire i can sell my furnace thanks guys

I hope my XFX R9 290 Core Edition will last a long time for me. Seems to be quite a good model aswell with good heatsinks.
