can an am3 motherboard use an amd phenom II x 4?

one of my PC has an am3 motherboard...
it only uses athlon II x 2 3.1ghz,
8gb ram, and
2gb built in video.
I am planing to imitate the speed of my intel core i5 PC

Yes they can, however you wont match any modern, or recent i5 with it.
Phenom IIs are AM3 processors.

What is your budget?
If you wish to keep your current motherboard look into something like a 965, or a phenom II x6.

the budget is not a problem. I'll just kept my motherboard because it's my first owned PC from my own pocket and I still want to use it sometimes.

If budget isnt a problem, keep the system as is and simply start a new one.
I wouldnt bother trying to find components to fit what you have for sentimental reasons.
