Hi,

I'm looking for some advice help on some new ram I've just purchased, I brought some ram 2gb Corsair Dominator second hand which was sold as 1.5v. I received it and without thinking immediately placed the ram in my partners PC. I started the system all the fans and leds came on but then turned off and then rebooted itself instantly this time the system stayed on running however the monitor did not display anything and remained blank.

I turned the PC off in a slight panic and took the ram out fearing I'd damaged my system, the system did boot almost normally however the first time the system came on it restarted as described before, it now is booting fine ( with my old ram ) and appears to have suffered no visible damage.

I did get taken to ASUS bios tweaking boot at one point, the system claimed the over clock had failed/reset ( cant quite recall ) I exited without saving and nothing seems to be odd about the system. I've never over-clocked this system?

My question is about the ram, upon further inspection the ram has 1.8v listed on the side and Im wondering if this ram is viable for my system, I had to place this stick in the 3rd out of 4 slots as it wouldn't fit in the first slot due to CPU cooler.

I'm aware that my bios does need updating and I definitely plan to do this, this could be the issue. The Corsair website lists the ram as 1.5v SPD, tested 1.8v.

Any help or opinions will greatly be appreciated.

PC specs:

CPU: Intel G620 ( is going to be replaced with an i3 3220 within days )
Current Bios: 1704 08/06/2011 ( very outdated )
Mobo: P8P67 Pro
GFX: 550ti Gainward
PSU: 750w ACE
Original Ram : 2x2gb Corsair vengeance CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9B 1600MHZ

New Ram stick 1x2gb Corsair Dominator TW3X4G1600C9D 4GB(2x2gb) 1600mhz 1.8v, ver3.3

I had planned to use all the ram together for 6GB RAM on this system, I believe the system was listing the ram speed @ 1333mhz. I briefly read that some of these boards are struggling until updated etc with reaching 1600mhz. The speed of the ram doesn't bother me at 1333-1600mhz etc but this may of caused the issue?

Thanks for reading, wrote this very tired need some sleep :)

Your mobo spec says -
"4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 Hz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
* According to Intel® SPEC, the Max. 32GB memory capacity can be supported with DIMMs of 8GB (or above). ASUS will update QVL once the DIMMs are available on the market.
* Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs.
* Refer to www.asus.com or user manual for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists).
* Due to CPU behavior, DDR3 2200/2000/1800 MHz memory module will run at DDR3 2133/1866/1600 MHz frequency as default."

Is the new ram on the QVL? What prompted you to buy it?

Ram is only guaranteed to work if its a tested kit. The 2 x 2gb will be. The 1 x 2gb will be. But not together.

With a dual channel ram mobo you need to have 2 x 1gb, 2 x 2gb or 2 x 4gb. You should buy a kit of the latter to ensure it works. And dump the other that you've got.

Same if I want to change my quad channel 4 x 4gb to 32 gb. I need to replace the 4 x 4gb with 4 x 32gb.

Hi I7baby, thanks for replying - I brought this from ebay sold as 2GB(1x2GB) DDR3-1600MHz PC3 12800 NON ECC Unbuffered 240 pin Desktop Memory(RAM) - I wasn't aware of what brand I was going to receive, the seller description said it would be from a branded company, Im assuming he has many ram sticks for sale and he just picks one up from the stock he had. My assumption which seems to be wrong was that I could just place a third stick of ram into my machine that would increase my ram total from 4gb to 6gb, the only things I checked were my ram type, speed, voltage etc ( I realise the dominator I got would 2x2gb stick with 1.8v listed on the side )

What would be the best advice? Is there no chance to get this ram to work? Get a refund or replacement that perhaps I can use?

Really appreciate any advice, my knowledge on this subject is very limited and most likely outdated.

Thanks for your swift reply, I can definitely return it the seller is happy to receive any returns as long as I pay postage. Do you think I should try the ram a second time just to be sure ( in my system with the old RAM ) or will this likely lead to damaging my hardware?

Good news for those who might have the same issue :). I decided to give it another go after updating my BIOS and placed the new ram into my system, the system didn't make post same as before however this time I used the MemOK button on the mobo, this took me to my BIOS and set my RAM settings @ 1066mhz and read all 3 ram sticks combined for the 6GB I originally aimed for. I went into BIOS AI tweaker set AI overclock tuner to XMP and set my memory frequency to 1600mhz manually.

So far I've checked with CPU-z that the RAM is running @ 1600mhz and the system seems to be stable, having no issues so far. As far as Im aware my system is working fine now, all 6gb is read by windows + BIOS. This worked for me, cant say if it would work for anyone as my tech knowledge is limited. If anyone has any info/opinion about what I've done, please share wouldnt want to cause myself an issue later down the line or for someone else, this has worked for me at the moment however.

My XMP profile reads : ddr3-1600 9-9-9-24-2N-1.50V

Thanks again for those who read and replied.

Hi, yes this appears to look the same as mine except the Newegg has a G on the end of the product model, this PC is primarily used for gaming mostly mmo games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 ARR. I havent tested if the machine will BSOD, I will try running these two games and Skyrim. This is my partners budget PC, so its just something to enjoy games on for her. I don't know any programs that I could test stability, perhaps Memtest or something which I would have to do tonight.. That PC is set to keep Blue screens on screen without restarting at the moment.

In the next day or so I'm waiting for a delivery on a i3-3220 that I got cheap off of ebay that will replace the G620.

I'm hoping this wont be an issue for me, for convenience sake ;p but now Im slightly worried, thank you for letting me know though about this. I was unaware of what RAM I would receive when I brought it and just so happened to receive the Corsair..

Really appreciate everyone's input and opinions.

After further review, looks like your prediction was true. I'd been testing the system with reboots etc and the system starting to BSOD until it could no longer reach post even with Memok button on the mobo. Best course of action now is to get a refund and find another set of sticks. Thanks for everyones help, appreciate it.
