The most common configuration is to not use raid at all.

Raid is for people who accept that they may lose the raid array, and all the data on it, at any time and without warning. They usually are very good at making backups and accept that they probably will have to reinstall everything when it happens. Raid is never a replacement for a backup system. Its intent is to keep the system running when you lose a drive or two.

So please tell us about your backup plan, and what you hope to get from raid so that we can steer you on the correct path / raid type.
