Whenever I download with high speed, internet slows down and WiFi disconnects

I recently started downloading a pretty big file using uTorrent. The file is around 59GB. Whenever I download something with highspeed (up to 15-16 MB/s), a few things happen:

  • ■ Internet slows down from 15-16 all the way to a few kB or 1.5MB/s
    ■ Unable to access my router through the IP address
    ■ Unable to connect to WiFi with any device, also kicks me if I am already connected.

Rebooting the router manually solves the internet issue, but I still cannot download the file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.■

uTorrent, opens MANY connections to maximize throughput. Those simultaneous connections can overwhelm a router. The router test article on the front of Tom's Hardware this morning discusses this problem. For torrent downloads, you may have to tune your client.

For some reason it only happens when I'm downloading bigger files that take more than a few minutes to download (judging by the fact that 1GB is under 1 minute). It started to act weird about 3-4 months ago.

Not sure what you two mean by "connections", you mean I have too many devices connected?

Is there any way to limit those connections?

I changed the max connections from 50 to 5, that only delayed the effect, after a while everything stopped again. Should I set it even lower? It worked with BitTorrent, uTorrent just stops working if I modify that number for some reason.
