I had the club3D Royalace R9 290 recently installed and completely forgot I probably needed a better psu as well. It only delivered 500W. I thought my previous card (hd 7970) needed more watts than the 290 (thought I read it somewhere). The hd 7970 broke down under guarantee and i decided to upgrade instead of having it replaced. I was very happy playing bf4 on ultra but after half an hour the pc shut down entirely and now the power led won't even light up when I try to start it. I figure the psu broke down. My question is: "Is this the case and if so, is there a risk other components have broke down as well?"

Depends of what safety procedures does your motherboard have, anti-surge and such. No way to tell until you replace PSU, unless there are any obvious scorch marks and such...

a decent PSU like seasonic, will just shut down, then should restarts. I had a fairly crap one and pushed it beyond it's limit several times over clocking CPU and two 7950's, it just shut down and then restarted.

I suggest doing the PSU check as above, fairly simple.
