Uninstalling AMD Chipset Drivers

Hello,

I just replaced an AMD board for its Intel equivalent. It runs Windows 8.1 well enough, BUT it is twice as slow as before despite the fact that it should be twice as fast (former CPU: X4 860K--current CPU: i5 4960K).

I read of someone else on this forum having the same issue but don't believe I read how they fixed it.... I would rather not re-install the OS--I just did an SSD migration that took about two hours. As I understand it: I do not need to re-install the OS so long as I delete all AMD CPU/MOBO chip-set drivers from my current drives.

So on to my question: how do I uninstall these AMD chip set drivers? Or where can I find them...?

amd drivers uninstall with its cim [catalyst install manager ] in the add/remove programs select uninstall follow prompts it should come up with remove all amd software ? yes or no, then yes ??

but it seem you would carry over any ''trash'' from the old system to the new and may run in to compatibility issues [opinion]

to me when windows installs it scans the build and unpacks whats needed so just moving from a amd build to intel are all the files needed for the intel installed ??

what you done kinda sounds lame to me [ more opinion]

good luck

Thank you for your input [senior moderator especially]... I will re-install Windows and give y'all an update just so no stone is left un-turned.

Monkey, you're right, I should have bitten the bullet and re-installed Windows... I knew I couldn't get away with just swapping hardware and installing a few drivers.

It seems that some drivers are more or less bound to the system. Right now the system is probably using some AMD drivers and some Intel drivers in tandem causing serious bottle necking. While the drivers could manually be uninstalled if one was VERY knowledgeable in software/programming/etc it seems that the Joe user should simply re-install the OS to rid their system of AMD drivers.

Game on...

I tried a clean install and it did not work. There seems to be a problem with my BIOS/Motherboard. I spent an hour fiddling around with different BIOS settings to get the Windows 8.1 disc to load but nothing worked.

When I change boot order to make the UEFI USB CD/DVD Drive that has a Windows 8.1 disc in it first priority I get stuck at either an MSI screen, a black screen, or a black screen with a Windows logo. The screen then "hangs" or "freezes" rather than loading the Windows disc in a few seconds.

The motherboard I am using (MSI H97I-AC) is an Intel equivalent of the one I used to have (MSI A88XI-AC). Without any BIOS updates I was able to successfully install Windows 8.1 using the MSI A88XI-AC. I remember getting "hang screens" but changing UEFI and UEFI+Legacy settings in the BIOS got me a Windows 8.1 disc boot. Trying the same thing with this motherboard (which uses almost identical software) I get no results.

What can you suggest I do? Revert to older BIOS versions until I can boot to the Windows 8.1 disc? Run the gambit of MSI support? Or is there another way around this...?

I waited at least two minutes at each "hang" screen--it simply wouldn't load Windows 8.1. My experience with a motherboard that is 90% similar to the one I just installed tells me that a Windows 8.1 disc either loads within several seconds or simply does not load.

BUT I had a "light-bulb" moment...

Following the official Microsoft.com clean Windows installation procedure I was told to insert the Win. 8.1 disc, restart the computer, change boot priority to disc drive, then restart once again before following the standard Win. 8.1 installation prompts upon loading the disc. For whatever reason that lies with this motherboard and chipset, that did not work, as stated... BUT I found that simply booting to a SSD with Win. 8.1 installed and opening the Win. 8.1 disc via file explorer got me to load the disc--a clean Windows 8.1 installation is in progress as this is written...!

I will post again if this supposed clean installation (or re-installation) of Windows 8.1 brings my system up to the performance level that it should be at with this new hardware. If it does not then I will post again anyways so that anyone experiencing this problem will have some trial and error notes.

Thank you to the moderators of Tom's Hardware for your support, I hope you were able to learn from this, I certainly was.... [don't trust MS support ;-)!]
