When you began choosing parts for your rig what did you choose first?

What did you choose first when you began choosing your parts for your build? Did you start with the CPU, motherboard or something else? Is there any reason why?

I start with the motherboard because it's the base of everything - what CPU socket, RAM speeds, number of PCIe x16 slots (if you want to do SLI, etc.), number of SATA slots (especially if I plan to use many SATA devices), number of fan headers, and so on and so forth.

For me it varies, sometimes I see a PC case that I love the look and design of, like the Fractal Design Node 804, so I buy one then work out a use for it :p
But generally purpose would be the starting point. Then which CPU best suits that within budget, then the best motherboard to support that CPU with things like USB/SATA/PCIE what ever is needed for the purpose.

Honestly I think case should come after you purchase the motherboard. Sure it's a good idea to have an idea of what you want your build to look like, but these days the case size is dictated by the motherboard especially with small form factor builds becoming more and more common than not. But the case size is dictated by the motherboard size, you can't fit a eATX motherboard in an mITX case that's a fact.

Yes but if your an apple person, form is more important than substance, get what looks pretty, then put sub par hardware in it to get it to work :p

Seriously though, even if you do get a mITX case you can still build something really nice in it, it just limits your options, if you don't need anything special you'll normally be fine. As I said with me buying a mATX case, I got it then worked out that I could do with it, and I now have a lovely HMC/LAN box :D

What is the minimum number of USB ports you think a motherboard should have? How many do you use and what do you use them for?

I don't think there should be a minimum number - you have your standard peripherals - mouse, keyboard, etc etc, and printers, controllers, phones/tablets and anything else you use that can be plugged into a USB port. I wouldn't limit the number but I would say minimum would be at least six, I wouldn't get anything less than that.
