Currently I have a HDD with everything on it, os included. If I were to buy a new ssd, to boot os from, how would I move the os onto the ssd?

Hi again, crosbycail!

You can re-install Windows on the SSD now without any issues. HOWEVER, if you are upgrading the mobo, you'd need an entirely new Windows installation. Otherwise the OS wouldn't know how to communicate with the new motherboard. Unless, it is the exact same model as your current mobo, you'd need a new activation code for sure.
So if you are planning to do any system upgrade whatsoever, I'd recommend doing a clean install afterwards. Either way, changing the mobo will require you to do this again with a brand new OS...
Welcome, crosbycail! :)

Well, you have the option to migrate or clone your current OS HDD to your new SSD. If you have the Windows Installation DVD/USB, I'd recommend a clean install though, you might need to re-install everything but at least you'll be starting fresh with the new SSD.
However, if you don't have the Windows Installation, cloning/migrating are your only other options. Here is a detailed tutorial that explains everything you need to know about migrating/cloning without re-installing Windows: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows

Hope it will help you! If you have any questions, feel free to come back and post about them! :)

As said, you either need to perform a clean installation or use imaging software to clone the contents of the drive. Don't use Windows to create a system image, as it will only allow the image to be restored to a drive which has equal or greater capacity than the original one. I've fallen into that trap.

CloneZilla is my personal favourite imaging tool.

Good luck! Hope I was helpful! :)
