First off I have read through a ton of threads and all super helpful, but finding myself in a unique situation and I apologize for all the information/questions, but any/all help would be appreciated.

We bought a 2 story 1955 home last year that has a few brick walls and is apparently build like a bomb shelter (first home so didn't realize). Thanks to the great previous owners all external DSL cabling is gone from the home outside of 1 port in the basement corner of the home in a bedroom and I have not been able to find where any of the other cabling goes or comes from...either was comcast so somewhat stuck here unless I extend the DSL, but wife isn't a fan of that.

I was using a WRT120N and figured it would be time for an upgrade either way so I bought the nighthawk AC1900 since the range wouldn't hit 80% of home. It works great for a majority of the home except the opposite corner upstairs where I installed a security system (knowing this would probably be an issue and delaying the inevitable as long as possible) that I either need LAN cable to or strong wifi connection.

My plan has been to LAN - LAN connect my previous router and run roughly a 100' cable to the opposite end of the home to set up an AP; but I have been thinking a little more in depth about this and wondering what I should do. I have another WRT120N laying around and I was wondering if a setup like this would work or what issues I may run in to.

I am thinking in the bottom corner and the top corners of the home I would set the 2 WRT120Ns and then setup the nighthawk in the middle of the home basement so use the 5ghz band and get the most bandwidth throughout the home with that.

I would need to set the channels to 1, 6, 11 and then 5mghz to whatever to split out the bandwidth, but I could use the extra outside as we have an acre of land; though we do have a neighbor on 1 side. I don't believe they even have wifi from using searching apps.

I would then need to port forward a cloud device with the wrt120N connected to the modem vs the nighthawk, LAN-LAN the Nighthawk as AP, LAN-LAN the other WRT120N on the opposite side of house and then figure something to do with security base to system...would that matter or should the speed be the same using the WRT120N as the first connection?
I have 50Mghz comcast

The security system also requires a LAN connection; could I use one of the routers that I am using as an access point to LAN connect to the security base or would I need to LAN connect that in basement to the device connected to the modem?

The point of using the Nighthawk in middle of home as AP would be to use 5GHZ as much as possible so is there a way to set devices to first access 5GHZ and then 2.5 if 5 isnt available using the same SSID or should I change the SSID for 5?

Any other suggestions anyone has I would greatly appreciate. The settings on the router seem to be in line with the other posts on here so I think it's just the structure of the home limiting range. The only thing I haven't tried is the QoS setting for downstreaming...any thoughts here?

Most of what you want to do will be fine. You likely should use the nighthawk as the router and the other 2 devices as AP but it all depends where the WAN connection is in the house. That may affect your choice of device placement.

I would actually use different SSID on all the devices and different SSID for the 2.4g and 5g on the nighthawk. The devices auto selection is not always that smart, it tends to not want to ever change to a better signal. Its a pain in some ways but a person can choose the best signal much better.

If I remember correctly the WRT120n was the device people complained about because you could not disable WPS. WPS is a huge security hole and in my opinion should be removed from all routers. Most newer devices you can disable this feature and it actually does disable it. Some of the older ones you could not disable and some even if you set it to disable it still accepted the pin.
Make sure you have the latest firmware on that box and hopefully they resolved the ability to disable WPS
