New Power Supply Destroyed my Motherboard

Hello,

I have something of an odd situation. I bought a new power supply (CORSAIR CX series CX750M 750W) in order to have enough power for my new graphics card (GeForce GTX 970). Upon replacing my old PSU and GFX card, I tried turning on my PC and nothing happened.

After messing around a bit more it turned on but immediately I hear a shock noise and smell smoke, so obviously in my head I was sure I messed something up. After turning it off and on again, it did turn on (no problem this time) but no image on graphics card (the graphics card fan would turn on shortly and then stop, the computer would still get to Windows because I heard the login sound).

So I tried putting the old PSU (Rosewill RG630-S12 - Green Series 630-Watt) and Graphics card (Nvidia Quadro 4000) and it turned on fine, like nothing had happened (I was able to go to Windows and everything). So, I turned it off took out the old graphics card and added the new one with the old PSU. And no image or anything.

Now the computer will turn on for 2 seconds then turn off and repeat the process until I shut it off (with both old and new PSU and Graphics cards).

I tried everything I could think of, removing RAM, taking out graphics card, taking out the motherboard out of the case and placing it on card board box, etc.

I assume the PSU either fried the motherboard and CPU (or one of the two) but I would like to know what suggestions you may have. Sorry for the long thread

Most likely the motherboard is dead... cpus tend to survive in most cases like this... of course there are those cases where the cpu dies too... but more often in a situation like that its the motherboard.

I assume you tried clearing the cmos...

You should try contacting corsair support and filing a case with them... see if you can get them to cover the cost of the burnt parts... after all it does seems its the power supplies fault... unless something was wrong with that new gpu.. even then that shouldn't fry anything that would only short the power out and the psu would shut itself off in order to protect the parts. So most likely the psu was faulty and killed the graphics card and then at some point killed the motherboard (and maybe cpu with it)

Without testing all the other parts individually in another machine you can not be exactly sure what is fried and what isn't..

Try corsair support first... if they refuse to help you'll have to find a way to test all the parts and organize whats working, and whats not... then you'll have to buy the parts that you'd need to replace... and throw away the broken stuff, or sell it for cheap "for parts or not working" on ebay.

Hey Videl, thanks for the reply. Yes I did consider the GPU but it seemed so unlikely that I almost dismissed it all together.

Luckily everything is still under warranty, I already contacted intel and Asus and they said they'll replace the parts (hopefully they won't back out) if not then Corsair will be getting a nasty email from me.

I did try CMOs but no luck, the only thing I didn't do at this point was shouting at the motherboard at the top of my lungs.

Hey bobesponjawow, I'm glad that your parts are still under warranty! Those are good news. I myself had a couple of cases like this where a power supply killed the parts. I have a dead evga lga 1366 motherboard lying around that met the same fate years back... but I had to bite the bullet and spend my own money to fix my machine as I didn't have warranty on the parts...

and I believe you... been there, done that... it can be very frustrating... sometimes I do wanna yell at the parts lol but I"m pretty sure that would only make my family members wonder if i'm alright lol

I wish you the best, let us know how it goes with the warranty replacements and corsair ;)

Hey, I got all my parts back. Never found out what did break, but yeah Intel and Asus were nice enough to replace everything. Never buying a power supply from Corsair ever again.
