Is it bad to use different size of RAMs?

I currently have Crucial Ballistix 12Gb of RAM composed of two RAM sticks. I cannot find any online that are at 6Gb. I had my computer built for me so I am not sure on the RAM setup. Is it bad if you possibly mix RAM kits. I'm looking about adding an additional 16Gb kit (8Gbx2) but im not sure if this will harm or disrupt my computer. Any help?

It is almost certainly 8+4 GB. Get CPU-Z and under "memory" tab you have an option to see each installed module and its characteristics. Additional memory should be the same type and model to prevent instabilities. If you cannot find that type, the best would be to sell old memory and get a 32GB dual channel kit (4 sticks). That is all provided your mobo supports 32GB of memory and has 4 memory slots.

I've got a Gigabyte H87-HD3 Motherboard http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Motherboard-4thGeneration-IntelCore-Processors/dp/B00CUYOWMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431518131&sr=8-1&keywords=h87-hd3

It has 4 slots available for RAM. Would it be best to avoid adding more RAM though?

it can take 32gb but why would you need 28gb of ram?

This board supports up to 32GB of memory (4 sticks of 8GB). However, unless you are doing video or audio editing or 3D rendering, I see no point in upgrading. As little as 8GB is enough for gaming - for even the most demanding games at the moment. Why do you want to upgrade RAM in the first place? You already have more than most people usually have.

A lot of video editing and processing to be done :D. I may not go the full way of getting a 16bg kit. Maybe just an 8Gb kit. Thanks bro for your time and knowledge.

an extra 8gb should be enough

though if its a dual channel board use 2 x 4gb

but mixing ram has no guarantee of working its hit and miss may work may not
