Will the G3258 screw me over?

I'm building a PC for the first time and I'd like to learn as much as possible while doing so (computers pertain to my major...also, games :D). Along those lines I'd like to gain some experience with overclocking so for my budget (~$750 for hardware) the Pentium G3258 seems like a good choice. I'd like to stick to Intel for processors so that I can upgrade to one of their higher-end quad-cores in the future. Therein lies my question: will the overclocked Pentium be okay for the time being? I'd like to be able to play modern games, especially Arkham Knight and other open world types. I know this is less than ideal, but are the four cores necessary or could I get by with some tweaks to the settings?
Where the rest of the ~$650 is going:
GPU: R9 280
Mobo: MSI Z97-G45. Overkill for the Pentium but nice for an i5/7.
8 gigs RAM, etc. etc.

note: I've yet to get a 1080p monitor, so in the time when I have the G3258 I'll likely be playing in 1366x768.

Solution
Honestly, I would not bother with the Pentium, and I would not be concerned with overclocking. A Pentium in a $750 build is a terrible deal. Take a look at what you could get for under $750

Hm, very nice build! I was going a bit overkill on the PSU and mobo I suppose. Could you explain why you're not concerned with overclocking? Seems like a good option to have. Or, it may not be worth the extra $$ spent on the mobo.

I have the G3258 myself, but i was on a budget. My friend gave me his Gtx 750 Ti and he's G3258 too. I'm going to wait some time until i upgrade to a i7 or at least to a i5 and get myself a GTX 970 too. But CTurbo is right. It would be a terrible if a pentium is in a 650 dollar build. Atlest get a i3 or go for does older Mobos and get a i5.
