You could put a 290 in it, however, heat wise that is a bad idea. the R9 280X is about 200 and is very good and will perform better than the 960. also it does not tend to run as hot. this is a very nice card, but it will most likely not fit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202137
this card is almost certain to fit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202128 but it is a 285 so it only has 2 GB of RAM.
I think this one could fit in your case if you move the hard drive bay a bit, but that bay looks like it may not move.

If your going to go with a 290 get one that does not have the reference cooler. With the turbine style cooler you will hit max temp and encounter throttling, get a nice third party cooler and temps will be just fine.

The 280x is also a great card especially at 1080p which most people run at.

EDIT------

Just noticed that your current case doesn't look like it has very good airflow, I can't say for sure that temps on either card will be very good in that case. Might want to look into getting a new one.
