Vaio S 13" DVD drive loads whenever I plug into a USB also external HD keeps spinning when plugged in.

It never did this before, not until I upgraded my CD Drive to BLU Ray. Now whenever I plug something ie iPhone or iPad, USB Flash or Portable HDD, the BLU Ray Drive turns on as if it's loading a CD/DVD and my external HDD spins forever... It may have been a Bios update, but why would that explain my CD/DVD drive loading whenever I plug or unplug a device?
