i am building a new gaming pc and plan to get the nzxt phantom 410. i am planning to get the asrock 970 extreme 3 motherboard and i want to know the maximum amount of fans i can use.

i heard something about the fan controller on the phantom 410 being able to power at least one of the fans and not needing to plug into mobo.

i am open for suggestions of similar priced motherboards but they must be available in australia.

thanks in advance

From the manual (MB layout) you can see that MB has 6 fan headers, 2X cpu_fan, 1X PWR_fan, 3X cha-fan. If you use either 3pin or 4pin fan Y Splitter cable so that you can use up to 10 fans + one from case fan controller, if you use one cpu_fan for the cpu cooler, or 8 fans + one if you use both cpu-fan headers. And I don't recommend use more than two fans on one MB fan header, because you don't want to overload to kill the fan header.

And an off-topic question, will you buy the fx8 series cpu? If yes, I recommend to buy other MB like MSI 970 GAMING, and ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+, because you need the MB has more power phase counts. If you want and make sure you buy the asrock 970 extreme 3 R2 at least. For example fx8320 (TDP 125W) is...

Admirable
I can see 5 fan headers on the board, not including the CPU fan. There is a weird PWR_Fan header that I counted, but that looks like a normal fan mount.

Along with the fan controller, you should be able to control 6 fans.

For example fx8320 (TDP 125W) is not in the cpu support list for the asrock 970 extreme 3. http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme3/?cat=CPU but the cpu is in the R2.0 version. http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme3%20R2.0/?cat=CPU

For the case, you may consider the full Tower format, like NZXT Source 530, Phanteks Enthoo Pro, etc. You get better air flow, and cable management solutions. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/parts/case/#sort=a8&page=1&t=4
