I am looking to upgrade from my Asus 7850 2GB crossfire setup to something more current. I get about 75% increase in performance when crossfire is enabled vs. single GPU. I will be playing games such as Shadow of Mordor and Attila Total War at 1080p and possible upgrade to 1440p within a year. I also have a bunch of older games like Metro series (not the Redux), Skyrim, and Dishonored that I play on the side which I would like to max out at mentioned resolutions. My CPU is an i7-2700 paired with 8GB Gskill Sniper RAM at 1866 and Corsair 750W power supply. I am looking to spend no more than $400 USD. I may be interested in purchasing newer games like the new Battlefield and Far Cry 4. Any input is appreciated.

Well for 400 dollars, I would say the r9 290 or X, or the GTX 970 would be your best bet.
It's about 20% faster than your cards in Crossfire, plus it has double the Vram. Then later on if you're up to it you could Crossfire another r9 290.
Your PSU should handle it.

However if you're looking for a bigger upgrade I would wait for the new r9 300 series, or save more and see if the price on the GTX 980 drops when the TI comes out.

-good luck
