What is Faster for Games? An R7 240 2GB DDR3 or a Radeon 7570 1GB DDR5?

I have the choice between getting an R7 240 2GB DDR3 or a Radeon 7570 1GB DDR5, but have no idea which one is better. I've searched a little for benchmarks, but can't really find anything which definitively tells me anything. Which card is better for games?

Certainly, the 7570. A 1GB GDDR5 card will out class any 2GB GDDR3 card. Cheers!

That's interesting because most that I've read so far says the R7 240 is faster than the 7570. Yet looking at the specs, it's hard to see why a couple video benchmarks seem to perform much better on the R7 240.

For example 3D Mark says the R7 240 is almost 2x as fast:

I'm no expert in looking at card specs, but what, if anything, would be holding the 7570 back behind the R7 240?

Ok, here are the real world benchmarks:

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim On AMD Radeon R7 240
Low settings 54 FPS
High settings 20 FPS
Elder Scrolls V Skyrim On AMD Radeon HD 7570
Low settings 60+ FPS
Ultra settings 20 FPS
Ultra settings with low shadows 35 FPS

The fact is 7570 GDDR5 card has a far better memory bandwidth that can handle double the amount of data than the R7 240 GDDR3. Anyway both are very low profile entry level cards and why you chose these? You've a budget in your mind? I'll get you a better one.

It's difficult to know what to believe. Looking at the specs you'd think the 7570 would perform better, but perhaps it's the superior clock speed, actual shader performance, and/or pixel rate which makes the R7 240 significantly outperform the 7570 in 3D Mark? It seems that the 7570's GPU would have to be hindered in some way in comparison to the 240 for it to score so much lower.

I read somewhere that the 7570 isn't officially supported by the latest drivers from ATI/AMD. I wonder if its the quality of the drivers that would make 3D Mark score the R7 240 as 2x as fast?

The reason I'm looking at these 2 cards is because they're (potentially) the best price per performance under $30 that I have found, but I'm finding almost no actual gaming benchmarks for the 7570 1GB DDR5 that can be compared to the R7 240 2GB DDR3.

Yes I agree that the R7 240 will do better in some games and especially the upcoming games, as it was released in 2013. Where as the 7570 was released in 2012. So updating drivers for the 7570 might become a problem when it comes new games. So considering these points, R7 240 might be the right choice.

Having said that instead of getting R7 240 2GB DDR3, I would suggest the R7 250X 1GB GDDR5 for a little extra, as you can experience noticeable performance improvement. Check the prices for both card below:

They have their own pros and cons, in the end they're equal cards. I don't see any difference. But you kept insisting and comparing 240 DDR3 vs 7570. So I thought you really wanted 240 DDR3. This is the first time you said 240 DDR5. Still its not a good purchase. You should have gone with at least R7 250X (is a rebadged 7770) or R7 260X for any meaningful performance.

Seems like you had cost in mind than performance and went with it. At the end of the day, If you're happy with what you got, then its fine. Have fun.

Thanks for the help, but the R7 250 was never an option. It requires too much power.

The R7 240, is it DDR3 or GDDR3? Because any card with DDR3 is at a major disadvantage. Anyway there isn't much difference in performance between the 2 GPUs....if they had the same RAM.

I ended up buying both a 7570 1GB DDR5 and a Geforce 640 with 2GB DDR3. The 7570 could overclock well, but even overclocked it could barely match the results of the 640 DDR3 at stock speeds.
