Ibm x226 hdd not detected

i got a ibm x226 given to me from work they were going to just throw it away. well i go to install opensuse and it does not detect the blue wd 320gb hdd but it does in the bios any help would be appreciated

yes sir. there is only 2 sata ports on the motherboard then there is a scsi i beleive that has a ton of scsi slots in the front of it. just seems like only when i try to install any os it does not detect the hdd. but in the bios it detects it just fine
 
This a server computer, and with only 512mb of RAM, it will struggle with modern desktop Linux environments (OpenSuse is KDE-based). If these servers are still around you, use other servers for memory donors.

Go to IBM support page for that server, and check what Linux versions are supported. You might have to go back couple of releases to find a Kernel supporting your server.

I suspect it is simply the case that the installation disk you are using doesn't have drivers for the IBM ServRAID-7e controller. As suggested by Alabalcho, you should use one of the distributions that IBM supports for this server. Otherwise you may need to compile a custom kernel to get the disks recognized. I don't think it's a question of the kernel being too new, just that it doesn't have support for the RAID controller compiled into it.
