You don't need the big clunky Hyper 212 if you aren't overclocking, you can go with a Hyper TX3, speaking of which, you could get a H97 motherboard since you won't be OCing that CPU. That power supply isn't the best but alright. Everything should be fine.

$2200 seems like a lot of money for those parts,[strike] where do you live[/strike]? Scratch that, just noticed Newegg Canada, lol.

Also, no you don't need a separate network card, pretty much every single motherboard out right now has built-in ethernet. Unless you're talking about a wireless adapter. You also don't need an internal speaker, but it does help when you have to diagnose a problem.

Xeon + 16GB because of Solidworks. Strix 980 because of 1440p display.

ok, starting to get on the right track here. that pcpart picker is a great resource. I was planning on shopping around for better deals but just used newegg to select all the parts. Can you (or someone) provide some insight as to the advantages/differences between the core and the xeon processor? thanks again guys

No point in Z97 mobo. Xeon is not overclockable. And your PSU won't allow you to SLI.
No need for liquid cooler. 212 is enough for Xeon and it would be quieter.
No point in 2133MHz RAM, it would be downclocked to 1600 anyway.
Seagate aren't reliable, Samsung SSD would be better than BX100.

Your last build is very unbalanced.
