Hello... I have been a member here for some time but never really asked anything till now. So if you guys could kindly help me I would be grateful. Ok to begin with I bough a new DVD Burner but it came in SATA, so my pc has both SATA and IDE, I put the IDE on the hard drive and the SATA into the DVD then turned on my pc. Soon after the DVD started to smoke and the pc turned off by itself so I removed the DVD again and put it back in and everything went fine except the part that the DVD wouldnt open at all but windows did recognize it. I turned off the PC and then removed the DVD and opened it and saw it had a burned chip inside... So what could have caused this? Maybe my PSU didnt handle well or is the SATA slot in my MOBO faulty? If I buy another DVD will this happen again or will my MOBO fry this time... I dont mind buying another DVD since they cost around 4 dollars but I want to know, ts safe to try again?

well, anytime i have an electrical failure like that i replace the psu even if it probably wasn't at fault. a bad psu can kill pretty much every electrical part in your computer so i just don't screw around with that.

it probably was just a bad dvd drive, but still you'll regret it if a week from now your psu nukes your motherboard and cpu not replacing it today.

The dvd was fine because I put it on from another PC to test it before , but as soon as I swapped it onto the other pc it burned. Is there a chance it could be the sata ports on the other PC?

I wasnt confusing anything, what I was trying to say is that 1 cant be since the dvd was perfect before swapping it to another PC... all I can think about is maybe the PSU is bad or the SATA port on the MOBO is faulty altho I dont know if a faulty SATA port could cause this much damage.

Thanks anyway, I think it might be the PSU although I was thinking about it alot and I might have half plugged the power into the DVD, I was kind of tired and it was like 3am when I was swapping the DVD drive.
