Ok, I just received a brand new, shrink wrapped PSU from EVGA. However, the PSU, not even plugged in yet, has an odd, almost burning smell to it, as if it was recently heavily used, boxed up then shipped to me. Again, this arrived new, shrink wrapped factory shipped. But it has an odd smell to it.

Can anyone tell me if this is odd and I should not even use it? Or is this common (I do not recall my brand new CX850M having ANY odor to it when unboxed).

Thanks for the replies. I am still a little worried. Especially when I don't see many others posting about this type of thing. The smell is very noticeable so now I wonder if mine is bad.

If this is expected....will it go away soon?

One thing I did notice upon unboxing was that the contents of the box was slightly warm...not hot but warm. I actually took the box from USPS driver and unboxed immediately. It was only 70 degrees (f) temp outside but wonder if box was in warm spot in delivery truck.

I hate when things like this make you second guess something.

Dude just throw that unit in your rig and put it under load. Load up P95 and Valley benchmark or whatever programs you have to put your system under maximum power draw. If you notice anything wrong with it after 20-30 min just RMA the sucker.

I know how you feel though. When you invest in an expensive purchase like that, you want an ideal unit. I am the same way.

Alrighty then...I hooked it all up...it's been running periodically throughout the day...the smell has greatly disappated. I feel better now.

This unit is very quiet...so far so good.

Thanks everyone for helping me out.

All, thank you for your response...I wish I could award you both for best answer!

I wanted to respond to my own thread to bring this topic full circle. I ended up calling EVGA, on a Sunday morning about 6a CST, in 2 minutes, I had a conversation with tech support. While he would not reference any "new" smell, he did assure me that the unit would be fine but he said to just request a replacement from who I ordered it and offered that if the store I purchased from gave any issues, to call EVGA direct and they would take care of it.

So since I ordered via Amazon which it was sold via Amazon LLC, in 2 clicks on my order page in Amazon I had requested a replacement. Meanwhile, I installed the "new smell" unit and within hours of operation, the smell dissipated and has worked flawlessly since.

When the replacement unit arrived, I quickly unboxed it and it too had the same exact smell. So, I simply returned the "replacement" and kept my original PSU in my rig.

All is well.

Do not hesitate to purchase an EVGA SuperNova PSU!
