Trying to keep programs with new motherboard/cpu combo

So, essentially I'm building a new system. I'll be going from a 3570k/z77 to 8350/990x, and will be using the hard drive I have in my current machine. Is there a way to do so without a complete windows reinstall? I'm trying to keep my current programs as they are(saved passwords, in the windows start menu, etc) Thanks in advance :)

New motherboard and CPU, especially a complete architecture change (Intel->AMD)....usually requires a full OS reinstall.
And obviously, all your applications.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it does, sort of.

Prepare for if it doesn't.

Unfortunately, that's not really an option. The 3570k and motherboard are on loan from a friend, and he needs them back. I managed to pick up an 8350/asus m5a99x combo(with 8 gigs of ram) for less than the price of a 4690k. If i had the money to do so, i would definitely be using a z87/i5, but not an option at the moment.

Yeah, that's kind of what i thought. Was just trying to avoid re downloading about 400 gigs worth of games and other programs. What about installing windows on a fresh hard drive and running the programs from the one i have? Obviously, the saved passwords and such wouldn't work, but could save the whole re downloading everything

Try to un-install the Intel drivers before you change the mobo. The chipset- and sata-drivers are most important. And make sure, you have the network driver for the new mobo on hand. The realtek doesn't work with generic M$ drivers.

Steam games will not have to be downloaded again.
See this:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129

This is about moving Steam games, but it is basically the same concept.

Find your current steamapps folder.
Copy it somewhere
Once the new OS is installed, and the new Steam client is installed, set that steamapps folder as a game location.
It should work just fine, without redownloading everything.

Other programs WILL have to be reinstalled.

It may work for steam games, but not for regular programs, because you don't have the shared files and registry entries on your new installation.
