Upgrading Motherboard & CPU, need advice.

I am thinking about upgrading my motherboard and cpu. They are both pretty old now, and since I just bought a GTX SC 970 acx 2.0, I wanna begin upgrading my other hardware. I'm thinking about switching from amd hardware over to intel, because all I hear about is i5's and i7's being great cpus.

So I'd need a motherboard and decent cpu combo. I can't afford to buy top of the line, but if there are any mid range cpus or a combination that will last me a few years without having to upgrade again, I'd even take suggestions for more expensive hardware, I'll just have to take longer to save up for it. I'm also looking at getting a new case. I'm thinking maybe a cube case, I've seen a couple that looked pretty nice, so if anyone has any suggestions for those as well.

Here's my current setup for reference:

CPU: AMD FX-8150 13 °C
RAM : 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. Crosshair IV Formula (AM3) 30 °C
Graphics : 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA) 37 °C
Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 840 Series ATA Device (SSD) 29 °C
596GB Western Digital WDC WD6400AAKS-65A7B2 ATA Device (SATA) 33 °C
223GB Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 ATA Device (SSD)
I also have a Corsair Hydro Series H80 cpu cooler, and Corsair CS650M psu.

i5 4690k and maximus vii hero! They're both top of the line! A 400 - 600 dollar budget is great for top of the line trust me! You can even go i7 4790k and VII maximus hero. That is if you are in the US...

I'm thinking anywhere form 400-600 for motherboard/cpu combo. I can't afford top of the line right now, but I think that should be enough for a midrange setup. I just want something that will be a little more current than my current system. The cpu I have, the 8150, is the latest supported cpu for the Crosshair IV, I am upgraded as much as I can be with that motherboard.

I am completely clueless when it comes to intel. I have been using amd since I built my first pc back in like 06.

That is if you are in the US. If you are only gaming go for i5 but if you might do more intensive tasks like video editing and some rendering, go with the i7. You can also go for a Gigabyte Gaming 5 or 7 and save a bit of money. You'll save about a 100 bucks bu going with the i5 as well. If I saved all that money on the mobo and the i5, I'd just keep on saving till I can get another 970.

Oh and if your RAM really is only at 668 mhz which I think is a typo, I'd use remaining memory to get new RAM thats 1600 or 1866 mhz.

On a whim I just checked out Newegg for these suggestions. They are currently running a deal on the i5-4690k and the Gigabit 5 for 320 dollars. Mail in rebates would drop it down to 300. It sounds like this may work for me, and though it's short notice, I may just order it tonight.

The Ram ends up being 1333Mhz, because I've got 2 sticks of 4gb.

Well I ended up ordering it. I feel kind of nauseous since I've now spent around 700 dollars the last two weeks on computer parts, but this should last me a good long while now.

Thanks for the help with this and the suggestions.
