Hey guys,

I would appreciate some help with some questions I have. Two questions please;

1. I`m new here and was wondering if someone can help me. I just bought a dell xps 8700. I got it off Ebay here are the specifications in the link.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/391129968228?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I understand it has a 460 PSU. Knowing what kind of specs this PC has, what PSU would I be safe with? I notice for the XFX R9-290X-8DFD Radeon R9 290X 8GB it states the minimum PSU requirment as 750 watts and the recommended at 850 watts but what would you guys personally choose? Can you guys send me some good links for some PSU`s? I know there are alot of good, helpful people here. Here is the exact description of the video card:XFX R9-290X-8DFD Radeon R9 290X 8GB 512-Bit DDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Double Dissipation Edition.

2. I know I should be able to achieve 4K gaming with the card above (XFX R9-290X-8DFD Radeon R9 290X 8GB) at around 50-60 FPS`s but I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative card you guys might be able to recommend where I could play most games of today (the new Batman: Arkham Knight game, using the recommended system requirements) where I can achieve 1080 on the highest settings (even ultra settings)? In other words, what I would be paying for the R9 above and the PSU say around $389 for the R9 and say $100 for say a 1000 watt PSU that would be around $489 total? Is there a way I can achieve what I mentioned above 1080 on the highest settings (even ultra settings) without paying nearly $500 for a 4K setup? Because if there`s not much of a price difference I would just go with the R9 290X.

Many thanks in advance.

It's unlikely you're going to be able to fit any of those big cards in that case. I think about 10.2" is the longest card that will fit according to this, and it would seem THAT is an unreasonably tight fit:

None of the 290x cards I'm finding are shorter than 10.89" long. You're either going to need a different case or a shorter card. I'm looking for options but using high end cards in OEM machines is problematic for exactly this reason. If there were removable drive cages it might be a different story, but I'm pretty sure those are not.

Planning to do 4K gaming on an OEM rig, and not one intended as a high end gaming machine, is probably not that realistic without some moderate upgrades like the case, cooling and GPU. 4K gaming is a VERY high end endeavor, mostly reserved for more or less high end rigs. If you can live with 1080 or 1440p, this might be realistic. OR, if you don't mind doing some modification to your case, you could cut away one of the drive bays to make the necessary room for a longer card.

Thanks. I will see if I can mod my case. I would be using the computer for gaming so it doesn't have to be cosmetically perfect looking.

If I need a tower case, what would you recommend?

I was also going to mention I have a Cyberpower i7 4770k PC as well. I could fit the R9 in there couldn't I? Sorry, forgot to mention that. It has a 750 watt psu so I'd have to upgrade that.

It would depend on the case model. I'll tell you right up front that I'm not a big fan of anything assembled by CyberpowerPC or iBuypowerPC, which are the same company, and well known for shipping junk.

If the case has enough room though, it might be doable. Any PSU used in a build by either of those companies is highly unlikely to be satisfactory for a high end card. The best they offer are Corsair units, and unless what you have is an AX or HX Corsair unit, the CX, CS, VS and RM units by Corsair really don't cut it. I could tell you for certain if I knew the model number of both the PSU units you have.

I wouldn't be expecting to do 4k gaming on a single 290x.
It just doesn't have that kind of muscle.
If you look around at the results people are getting from a Titan X and the 295x2 your looking at 30-50 fps at most with those cards.
290x your most likely going to be gaming at 1440p or 1080p for decent frame rates.

That would depend on the title. Some titles the edge actually goes to the 290x, even over the Titan. I'll agree with the gist of your statement though and as I almost always say, 4K gaming is still a rather specialized, high end endeavor, best obtained by the use of CF or SLI. If you're expectations aren't too high though, and you can settle for high or medium settings, you could do well enough. Even at ultra, some level of capability still exists, it's just not going to be outstanding.

As you can see here, the 290x beats the Titan on most titles. The Titan X is probably a different story.

Ok,

So lemme ask with the cyberpower PC having a 750 watt psu (with thermatake), I should be able to install the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card without problem?

As I said, the model makes all the difference. Thermaltake has a couple of decent PSUs but most of their models are junk. If it's a Smart Series or TR2, I wouldn't use it AT ALL with your high end hardware. Find the model number ON the PSU itself. There should be a label with it's specifications. You may have to remove the four screws that hold it to the case and turn it to read the label if it's mounted on the side you can't see.

Topower -700a-b. There is no way this would work in my xps 8700 is there?

I am trying to find a way to upload a few pics of my cyberpower PC, right now it has a Gtx 670 2gb in it and there looks to be a lot of slack left, possibly enough to fit a r9 290x, 8 gb card in there. I cannot find any info about what kind of case tower it is though. I have looked allover.

I am trying to find a way to share pic links here.

Here are pics from my Twitter page. Hope this works.

Basically I think if someone can recommend a good psu for my cyberpower system, perhaps a 1000 watt psu or whatever my r9 would work good with even a 850 psu I think I'd be straight.

Here are my cyberpower PC specs:

i7 4770k
2tb hdd
8gb RAM
Dvd burner
Windows 8.1

Topower is a Tier 5 manufacturer, and relatively uncommon these days due to their "crappiness", as seen on this older Newegg PSU tier list:

https://community.newegg.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/f/135081/t/45344.aspx

They don't even make the Dottorent PSU Tier list 2.0, although I think they were a Tier 5 on the old Dottorent list as well.

I would highly recommend not even using it with your current system.

Thank you so far for all of your help. What would you recommend for my system (the cyberpower PC system)?

Looking for as I've mentioned a 850-1000 watt psu.

Also, judging by my pics on Twitter does it look like the r9 290x, 8 gb video card might fit? The gtx 670, 2gb that's in there now is 9.5" x 4.38" and it looks like I have more than 2 inches of slack available. I understand if you don't answer about that because you might have to actually be here physically to see what it looks like. If you can recommend a good psu I'd be happy enough. Thank you.

I don't visit Twitter, Facebook, Myspace or any of the other social networking sites. It's a personal rule. If you post the images here, by using the
tags, or as outlined at the following link, I'd be glad to take a look.

Those prices don't include mail in rebates, if available, so they might be a bit cheaper when it's all said and done. Any unit of 850-1000w that's reasonably lower priced than any of those is probably not of sufficient quality to warrant use in a high end system.

Yes, it will fit easily. That case supports cards up to 344mm. Looks like all the models will fit. Not a terrible case choice either. Not the one I would pick, but you could do much worse and if you like the looks, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it, and a lot of things that are very good.
