change from 32 bit to 64 bit windows 8.1

I have a 64 bit HP that was changed to windows 7 32 bit by mistake I have the 8.0 pro version cd which I loaded but it would not take the 64 bit cd because it says it is a 32 bit pc so I used the windows 32 bit cd download which worked fine. then proceeded to download windows 8.1 which is fine, in essence I am running windows 8.1 but in a 32 bit mode in a PC that is a 64 bit is there a way to change it or am I stuck running it as a 32 bit PC

If you want it to be 64bit, you must boot from the install media and do a full installation.

Because you have the same OS, one that is 32bit currently installed on the system.
Trying to install a 64 bit version of the same OS will result in one or two actions.
As said by Usafret, you must do a clean install of windows and not use the upgrade option of the windows install.

You have two choices when it asks you where to install windows, to what hard drive in the system.
If you select install on the same HD as the 32bit version of windows then you should end up with a multi boot option once the 64bit version of windows is installed. selecting to load the 32bit version or 64. bit version.
Or simply format the drive in question you wish to install the 64bit version of windows too, by using the drive options to wipe out the 32bit version with a format of the HD, by the drive options in blue at windows install.
