First of all, thank you for reading this question.

I have an old computer which I do not use anymore and I am thinking about building a server out of it in which files can be shared in my 3 desktops (running windows 7 and 8), Macbook, iPads, smartphones(iphone 6) and smart TV.

I am a newbie and I have no clue if it is even possible. If it is, could you please instruct how to do it? If not, what are my limitations and what is the most I can use on those listed devices? Geniuses, please help!!

You can turn it into a NAS (Network Attached Storage) system using FreeNAS (free) or other available software. I've done this with an old computer and it is capable of delivering any media content to my PCs, game consoles, phones and tablets.

There are many resources available to help you. Check http://www.freenas.org/ to start.

Open Media Vault is another good one for computers that can't quite handle FreeNAS.
