Computer randomly shuts down and fans go crazy

I've been having a problem with my pc for a bit now. Every time I play a game for an hour or two my pc shuts down unexpectedly and the fans start going crazy. This screamed that it was overheating to me, so I have been monitoring the temperatures for a week or so now and from everything I can find it seems that they are not too high. I looked in the bios and saw that the cpu, RAM, and iGPU were overclocked (my friend did that a year ago or so) so I reset them to default and windows started freezing about 30 seconds after it started up consistently. I turned the settings back to what they originally were (overclocked) and it started working fine again with the same shutdown issue.

I've done a couple different tests on my RAM and it seems to be fine.

My cpu is an AMD FX-8320 with stock cooling.
Motherboard is an MSI 970A-G43.
GPU is a Sapphire HD 7970.
Power Supply is a Corsair CX600.

I have windows 7.

Has anyone ever come across this problem?

I think I know what TMPIN1 is. Next to the CPU are some mosfets and other power regulating electronic components that do get nice and toasty when your computer is running. There is a nice black cover over them most of the time. 85c is ok for the temp of that.

OK. I will accept your judgement on the fan speeds. I did try to find where MSI might have had some software for that motherboard that would help control those fans, and came up empty.

LOL, ok. So you are one step ahead of me on the power supply. But that is a good thing. It eliminates that possibility.

I keep going back and reading your original post. And the one thing that keeps sticking out in my mind is that the fans go nuts. And I keep wondering what would cause the fans to...
OK, everything was overclocked. What were the temps when gaming?

And when you reset everything back to defaults, what were the temps?

And you said the fans started screaming... all of them, some? And what about the power supply fan? Was it screaming too?

1) The graphics card gets up to about 80 C and the cpu can get to the low 50's. There's also one particular temperature on the motherboard that gets up to 85.

2) I was never able to check those temperatures because the pc would freeze before I was able to open hardware monitor.

3) It sounds to me as if all of the fans are going at 100%, but I'm not sure how to check the power supply. It's definitely still running during this, but idk if it's at 100%.

What temp was getting to 85c?

There are 2 case fan connectors plus the CPU fan connector on the motherboard. Is there anything in the BIOS that allows you to define speed changes at various temps?

I am really starting to think it might be the power supply. Except for that one temp, every temp looks good. What really make me think ps is when you dropped the clock speeds, which should have made everything cooler, and it was worse. And that is something a power supply will sometimes do.

Do you have a spare ps you could use for a little while to test it?

1) It's called TMPIN1. It's on the motherboard and I have no idea what it is.

2) There isn't, but I've checked the speeds and for the most part they seem to be going proper speeds at proper temperatures.

3) I also thought it was the power supply actually. I originally had a 460W supply by cooler master and it was still doing the same problem. I bought the new one and put it in Friday but even with the new one it's doing the same thing

I keep going back and reading your original post. And the one thing that keeps sticking out in my mind is that the fans go nuts. And I keep wondering what would cause the fans to go nuts, and I can only come up with two possibilities:

1) Less than stable power feed causing the motherboard to do weirdness.
2) Motherboard defect.

Since 2 power supplies have done exactly the same thing, We are now left with the motherboard, because nothing else affects those fans.

Now this defect does not have to be a hardware defect. It can be the BIOS firmware. Go into your BIOS, and look for the BIOS version number. If it is not BIOS version A.4, dated April 14, 2013, I would update the BIOS. It might work, it might not. I will have to let you figure out how to update that. I did find a note on the BIOS page suggesting that you should use "Live Update" to upgrade the BIOS, and a warning on attempting to go to an older BIOS.

Please do not attempt to update the BIOS during a thunderstorm or hurricane... LOL.

If the BIOS is version A.4, then it is probably going to need to be replaced. And I looked for, but failed to find the warranty period on that motherboard.
