How many radiators do you really need?

I am going to be buying a fractal define s soon and want to watercool my i5 4690k and gtx 970 for more looks and i just love working on my computer. Now i am at a point where I'm looking at radiators and how many i need. I have settled to go with alphacool as i trust the brand very much and love the quality of there stuff; I want to just go with a 360mm radiator at the top of the case to reduce costs of the loop but i am not sure if that will be enough to cool my overclocked CPU and GPU. So generally i am asking is a 360mm 45mm thick radiator enough to cool my overclocked CPU and GPU or should i also add another like 280mm in the front? Also i have alot of extra AirFlow corsair fans will those work fine?

360 is a bit tight.

A 360mm X T45 AC gives you:

183 watts at 1250 rpm
204 watts at 1400 rpm
257 watts at 1800 rpm

4690k = 130 watts overclocked
GTX 970 = 168 watts, 188 OC'd
GTX 970 (future) = 188 watts

total = 506 watts.

You want at least 60% of the heat handled by the rads for the standard target Delta T of 10C so that's 304 watts w/ 2 cards....191 with just one. So with 1250 fans you'd be OK for one 970....but short for two.

Here's what I would suggest:

Use a XT45-420 which for $5 more, gives you 36% more cooling


A 420mm X T45 AC gives you:

250 watts at 1250 rpm
278 watts...
A single 360 should work fine. Even overclocked your CPU and GPU aren't very power hungry. I can't comment on those specific fans, though. I was cooling my 3930K(OC'd)and dual GPU Radeon 6990 with a single 480 Rad a few years back. My fans were quite loud though as I wanted low temps. They were both much more power hungry than your cpu/gpu though so I had more heat to dissipate.

For the $5, it seems the proverbial "no brainer" for 100 watts more cooling.

Before pulling the trigger tho I'd suggest you take a look at the Enthoo Luxe..... I can't say anything bad about the R5 ... for air cooling the two cases are close to a tossup. But the Luxe I find is much more conducive to water cooling...

1. The "attic space" for the top fans is very convenient... (BTW, you'll wanna use push for rpm below 1750 or so.)

2. The case comes with 2 of the 3 140mm fans you'll need and they are the best on the market atm.

3. It also comes with an included ($20) fan hub which you can use to control the fans automatically in response to CPU temps.....Fractals hub doesn't do that.

4. It comes with a reservoir mount

5. It comes with an anti vibration pump mount.

6. It comes with a 5 year warranty versus the R5's 1 year

BTW, I have two Alphacool Rads on my build .... screw protectors, 7 ports are features not found on many units. be aware tho, that they leave a lot of crud in the rads.... I spent 4 hours prepping the rads rinsing with acidic and base solutions followed by a week on DW before adding my engineered (Mayhems Red Pastel) coolant.

It is recommended that you clean AC rads with the Mayhems Blitz kit B4 adding your coolant.

I think i am going to go for a 360 in the top and a 280 in the front but im still curious if you know if airflow optimized corsair fans will be enough or will i need to upgrade them to static pressure optimized fans.


 
High static pressure simply means high rpm. What label the vendor decides to put on them is not really meaningful, just select based upon rpm. With Alphacool 8 - 12 fpi fans, you have all the data you need to pick the correct fan. Water cooling test sites like Martinsliquidlab don't even list test data above 2200 rpm as there's few radiators today that would benefit from it and few builders today who would put up with the noise.

The Corsair high static (2350 rpm) ones are almost H100i level loud and depending on how could your fan control system is, you may not be ablk to turn them down below 50% (1125 rpm). I'd wanna be running at 850 rpm max.
