My PC turned itself off. It won't turn back on again.

My PC turned itself off out of nowhere while I was playing a game. It won't turn back on again.

There are no signs of power except for to the USB ports (light shows on a USB key when plugged in).

I have been monitoring temperatures recently due to getting a new graphics card and there has been nothing too hot. I can not find any loose connections. I have tried booting without the GPU. I unfortunately do not have immediate access to another PSU to test that.

Test the voltage of the psu. If it is giving of power it is fine. It might be a motherboard problem.

Do I need certain hardware to do this? It's certainly giving power to USB ports I'm not sure about anything else. How would I test a motherboard problem aside from buying a new motherboard?

You need a voltage tester. I doubt that they're expensive but there are other ways. Just check on youtube or google. I know there are ways to do it without the tester but they escape me atm. Does the power button light up? If not it is probably the motherboard. Do you have a friend with a computer who can test your cpu and gpu? They might be the problem but it is unlikely.

try the easiest thing first

take out the 24 pin on motherboard

take out power cord

press on/off button a few times

put 24 pin back in

put power cord back in

turn on

There is no power light. The only light I can see is from the USB key. I could try the paper clip test on the PSU to see if it's working.

you can test the psu is working by jumping it--but that wont necessarily rule out the psu since it wont be under any load

Paper clip doesn't seem to work. Even though the PSU clearly gives power to the USB ports.

the usb ports are only 5v

maybe your 12v rail is gone

Just bought a new PSU. CX750M. It works.

I would like to know what caused it though. Could a new GPU cause something like that? I installed a Sapphire 7970 a couple of weeks ago.

The old PSU is only 2 years old or so.

A power surge could've caused it or just shutting down without warning if the plug was pulled or something

It was probably bad luck then. That is a good power supply and should've lasted longer. (R.i.P TX 750)

It should have a 3 year warranty at least, if not with the reatailer then with the manufacturer.
