Building first PC, need input and would like to hear about the build I am considering going with. Will be using PC for gaming as well as occasional other work.

Solution
Windows 7 is your best bet until Windows 10 is released. When it is, simply upgrade to it.

Here is what I would do to keep costs down. Note the price is after rebates:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($166.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($63.00 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($97.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($44.10 @ SuperBiiz)

Usually i am not the guy who says wait a little because you can play that game forever, but i'd say wait a little more until Intel Skylake comes out. It is a new chip, i think it will be using DDR4 memory, why not wait 3-4 months and if you will be buying an OS for the build W10 will be out as well.

Just catch up on indie titles for the next few months, or play the console.

Strange, not sure why they didnt post with that. Here they are

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card
Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor: Acer G236HLBbd 60Hz 23.0" Monitor

I also need help choosing an OS, I'd like the PC to be mostly for gaming but also be able to occasionally work on it as well as be able to play older games that might need DOS etc. If there are any cheaper alternatives to parts that would be very helpful as well, thanks!

^ You don't need a 750W PSU for a build with a GTX 960. An XFX 550W unit would be solid. The CX series from Corsair are subpar in build quality and have cheap capacitors which can fail under load. Not ideal for use in a gaming pc. You also don't need 16GB ram, 8GB would be plenty. Case is personal preference, but it's nice to have something with decent build quality and features. For around $50 I would look into a NZXT Source 210 Elite or a Corsair 200R. You can get cheap cases like the Deepcool Tesseract for $36 which is no better than the Rosewill Challenger you have selected. You could get away with a cheaper mobo/cpu combo such as an i5 4460 and matching H97 motherboard.

For the OS I would look into Windows 7 64bit. Both 7 and 8 are in line for a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released, but 7 is known to have better support for many of the older games out there.

If you need a revised partlist to get the price down, tell me. I will post one.

Windows7?????????????? It's an old OS that MS will stop supporting very soon, just for general PC usage Windows 7 is outdated. Plus the upgrade is free for 1 year only to Windows10 (as far as i know) so why pay 2 times for OS.

I am using Windows 10 technical preview, not even a complete version and i have not had a single issue with a single game off Green Man Gaming, Origin or Steam. Since i installed W10 i have played or partially played Crysis 3, Pillars of Eternity, Ghost Future Soldier, Trine 1 and 2, Installed RYSE, 2-3 Lego games (for the nephews) and not a single issue.

W10 is superior to W7 in every way and needless to say to W8.1, so i don't think anyone should spend money on Windows 7 now.

You're using a technical preview, not a full OS. Just as the name states this preview will eventually come to and end and you'll have to buy Windows 10 else you will be left with an OS-less PC. Also I completely disagree that Windows 7 is outdated, it offers just as much functionality, if not more than Windows 8.1. I have 8.1 on my desktop and 7 on my laptop. Just because MS will stop supporting it does not render it obsolete.

If you have one whole year to upgrade to 10, that is clearly the user's fault for not updating their OS. As long as the update is within the time frame they only need to pay once.

I was trying to say that even as a tech preview W10 is amazing and everything works, the full version will be even better. I had W7 on my PC and it is GREAT, i have W 8.1 on my laptop and it is the worst OS of all time. As good as W7 is W10 is better, it is smooth, easy to use, it really is all that and a bag of chips.

Also what i mean as far as 1 year, is if you buy W7 or W8 you can upgrade to W10 for only 1 year, after that you have to pay for it. I am saying why pay $100 for W7 if you will have to pay $100 again sometime later for W10. Why not just wait until W10 comes out in 2 months and pay for it only once. I don't see a point of paying for OS that is 2 generations old even if it is great.

That would be very much appreciated if you could revise my part list. Should I also be looking into a CPU cooler? and will the revised list be able to handle most newer games at 60fps and 1080p. I am also looking into this monitor Acer G236HLBbd 60Hz 23.0" Monitor. feedback on that? Thanks

I have also heard good things about W7 and a lot of people/a few friends say they are not a fan on W8 so I was leaning toward 7, just was not sure which would be better to handle older games as well as new.

If you don't need the SSD you could upgrade the graphics card to something more powerful, such as a R9 290.

I dont mind spending up to an extra $150 or so on top of what is listed if it will help with better graphics or to run better . this parts list looks great by the way appreciate it. Do I need a CPU cooler as well?

I also meant to ask you why the 8gb instead of the original 16gb for memory

You don't need one, but it would be beneficial. Depending on the aftermarket cooler the CPU would run cooler and could be noticeably quieter as well compared to stock. Before looking into buying one I would try the stock cooler that comes with the CPU and see how that works out for you.

If you have an extra $150 to spend I would upgrade the GPU to a GTX 970. It should run most games near max settings at 1080p.

Great, I will most likely do that. Will this setup be much better than xbox one? (which is currently where I do all gaming)

thats what I like to hear. I just dont want to have any regrets when I finish building this PC...like regretting not having a better graphics card or better cpu etc
