Hi,
I have had PSU related issues for 5 months now. If I have the PC running intensive programs it cuts out. I have asked countless people what this would be caused by and they all said I should get a new PSU.
Here are my specs:

CPU: I7 3770k 3.5GHz
GPU: GTX 970
RAM: 16GB Kingston Hyper X Genesis
Motherboard: Asus p8z77-v lx
HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda
PSU which is probably broken: 500w bronze corsair

I was planning on overkilling it and buying a 1000w PSU just to get this issue over and done with and never see it again, I don't mind over spending to have more breathing space. What PSU would you guys recommend?
Thank you.

Solution
There's a good chance it's the PSU but nobody here can say for sure. What is sure is that the PSU you have is not too good and should be replaced anyways. That's my opinion from what I've read about your problem.

The xfx 500w units are great. Seasonic 550 and 620 units are great too.

If you want a bigger nicer PSU to last for many builds for the future get the
EVGA SuperNova G2 750/850 XR series PSU
10year warranty, Flat Modular Cables and 80+ Gold Efficiency. Excellent PSUs

Hi I was hoping to get a larger one, do you know any good 1000w PSU's? I was planning on getting a Corsair Gold 1000w.

But what if the problem is not the psu?

You should make sure it is the psu before spending your money on a new psu that will not solve your problems. You could take it out and put it in another computer to see if it causes the same trouble, or you could take it to a local computer shop and have it tested for you. You can also buy a (digital) psu tester that you connect to the psu and see if it returns any errors.

Your problem is not watts, it's quality. A good 500-600 watt PSU is all that you need. The XFX 550 mentioned above is so far superior to the crappy Corsair you have and will be more power than you need. The EVGA B2 and G2 series are also great quality if you want more wattage.

Hi,

I have been trying to find the cause of these crashes since January. The last two components that could be causing this is the PSU or the motherboard. Everyone has told me it will be the PSU though. I also bought a cheap testing kit for the PSU and it was all positive. I spoke to someone who works around PSU's and they said there are lots of different ways to check a PSU other than one of those testers and the tester doesn't even check everything.

Here is the issue explained:
I will run a game, at a random time it will crash and the PC will reset. It will say Asus anti-surge was triggered to prevent damage from an unstable power supply unit. I read that anti-surge is over sensitive so I turned it off. The PC started freezing instead. One person suggested doing a torture test on the PC, it crashed in 10 seconds and then it wouldn't boot and just blue screened. I had to re install windows to get past the blue screen.

People said it might be the temperatures, I checked those and nothing even comes close to being too hot. It's pretty much when the PC is on full load and 100% busy it will crash. Apparently this is down to the PSU not providing enough current.

So right now I am thinking I need to replace the PSU. I only own 1 desktop PC so I cannot switch things around to check if they work with other set ups.

Is corsair a known bad brand for PSU's then?

I was told that my PSU might not be providing enough current, so I was planning on buying an over kill unit that gives the PC plenty of extra room. I don't mind paying extra.

I posted the kind of crash I have above ^, do you think what I described would come down to the PSU being the faulty part? Or could it be down to something else? I checked the RAM, that's fine, not the temps and scanning the HDD now, but I doubt that's the cause.

Thanks.
