Issue: Firefox is not allowing itself to be set as the default browser on windows 8.1 x64 bit Professional. This behavior started a week ago after altering the amount of space allotted to system restore.

Things tried to date: Setting Firefox as default browser through its settings. Trying to force-set firefox as default browser through Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs. Have attempted uninstalling/reinstalling firefox to correct this issue as well and it persists. Have checked through the list of automatic updates to windows, nothing here seems to conflict with firefox.

Any assistance in forcibly making firefox operate as my default browser would be greatly appreciated.

Check for any junk plugins/toolbars or any related useless adware junk in the firefox addons, the add/remove programs control panel menu, and uninstall if any are found. Also check these in any other browser (ie and google chrome if installed). Then try setting the default browser again.

- This solution has not produced results, The post to follow is also not a solution as Reply seems to believe it to be the same thing as Answer.

There are no unwanted programs installed nor junk toolbars/plugins installed. (Really only ever use addblock+, Ghostery, and NoScripts) on firefox. Checked Chrome and IE and there is absolutely nothing installed on either of those at all. Gave a run through malwarebytes, ccleaner, and avast just in case anything strange was going on, that pulled up nothing that would cause this behavior.

Did set Chrome to default to see if it'd stop, Chrome sets just fine which is mildly irritating. When I go to set mozilla firefox however, it will set but then it does not seem to stay. Uninstalled, ran CCleaner, reinstalled, and the behavior of "Do you want to set mozilla as your default browser" question upon every load persists. It does not seem to want to stay set as default and it is irritating.

Found the solution. There was a faulty update of adobe flash player interfering with the settings and making the entire thing go absolutely mental. Removing it, cclean out the unwanted registry files, and did a fresh install. The error was taken care of.
