Mouse/keyboard stop working after startup on newly constructed PC

I just put together a PC about an hour ago and I moved a hard drive from another computer into this one. I'm also using the same processor but everything else is new.

On startup, the keyboard and mouse light up so I feel as though they are being powered and that should be a nonissue. Also, the keyboard input does work when it gives me the dialogue to start windows in safe mode.

The issue is that whenever windows starts, the keyboard and mouse go dark and become unresponsive. The LEDs shut off at the same time and I have no input.

I've tried another keyboard and mouse set but there was also no response. With the LED key/mouse set, I get a message telling me that drivers are being installed but I've been waiting quite a while now and it doesn't seem to have made any progress. I suspect that old drivers may be an issue.

I have tried starting in safe mode and it seems that the mouse and keyboard can occasionally maintain power to keep their LEDs on this way, but they do not give me any input.

I apologize if I come across as an idiot, I'm trying to set this computer up for my son. Anything you guys could advise me to do would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
You are trying to boot from the windows installation that was on that hard drive in the previous computer?

Wont work . [ unless the hardware is identical ] because the drivers will all be different .
That may explain why the USB ports are not working

Yeah, I was trying to see if I could use my same Windows installation so I wouldn't have to spend 80$~ on another windows that i already own. The hardware is very different, so it looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a new windows disk anyways. Thanks for the help.

I have a similar problem (mouse/KB won't work except in bios using old install of win7), except they also won't work during the windows installation when I have the win7 install disk in

I have this exact same issue, m+kb (both simple versions, plugged in USB2.0 right in mobo) work in (UEFI) BIOS and during the "press any key to start from CD/DVD" message but after that nothing. I tried to turn the USB legacy setting on and off but except for it stopping to work in BIOS as well and having to manually reset the CMOS a few times already it doesn't resolve anything. The current Win7 install (a fresh one, but 32 bits by mistake) might be at fault. I've also got a PS2 connector but neither mouse nor keyboard work on that - tried both PS2 m+kb as well as my USB through a converter plug. Oh, and safe mode doesn't work either, just doesn't respond.

I'm making a separate topic with all info for this, just wanted to let you know you're not alone in that one.
