Hi,

I have a Sony Xperia S, Android version 4.1.2.

When I am updating software on my Android cellphone, I am constantly getting the error:

Error downloading "App Name". There is insufficient space on the device.

In Settings->Apps I have the following information:

Downloaded:
1.7 GB used
260 MB free

Internal:
6.2 GB used
20 GB free

All:
1.7 GB used
260 MB free

In Settings->Storage I have the following information:

Device Memory:
Total Space: 1.97 GB
Available: 246 MB

Internal Storage:
Total Space: 25.80 GB
Available: 19.60 GB

Can I set the apps that I update/download to be stored by default on the Internal Storage such that the error message does not occur? How can I set this up?

Thanks in advance.

Your apps are being installed to "internal storage". It is the only place where they can be stored. Device memory is the RAM where the app runs - it is not being stored there. Device memory will empty when the phone is powered down, and apps will load back into it when your phone powers back up.

If your error message is being caused by the "device memory" being full, try killing off some of those apps you are running.

A full power off and restart often clears device memory that apps "forgot" they were using and kept hold of when they stopped using it.

If that doesn't work, it could be a full cache that is causing your problem. To clear it

Go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications on your Android.

Press the Menu button and select the Sort by size option. If you’re on Android 2.2, select the All tab first.

To check if an application has a cache, select it in the list and it will be stated on the resulting screen. To clear a cache, simply press the Clear cache button.

A couple of apps that may have a cache of several MB are Maps, Market, Internet and Gallery (called Photos on some devices).
