Hi guys,

My PC is suddenly very slow and laggy. For example, it takes a few seconds of a frozen screen before the computer registers that I pressed backspace and the words that I type do not appear in the box without a small delay. Other problems include when I press the windows key, it takes me to a blank screen for a few seconds while the tiles load. If I right click on the desktop, it takes about two seconds (sometimes up to twenty seconds) to open up the little drop down menu. When I click "open new tab" on chrome, the little loading circle appears next to my mouse for a few seconds before the tab opens. I can play games and watch videos still but they are much slower and laggier than before. Also, when I two-finger scroll, my computer freezes for about 15 seconds and then scrolls instantaneously however far I swiped.

My two i7 cores are at about 55 Celsius right now while I am backing up my computer. The HD is at 43.

I'm not sure what is going on:
I have not recently downloaded any new programs.
I ran two different complete virus/malware scans and both came up negative.
I checked if my computer needed defrag and it said no.
I installed all recent updates to windows 8.1.
I restored my computer to an earlier date.
I ran CCleaner.
I disabled any unnecessary startup programs.
I have ensured that no extraneous programs are running.
My computer hovers around 5% CPU, 15% Memory, and 0-1% Disk on the task manager and all of this still happens.
Moreover, I am noticing that a lot of core systems are taking up a lot of power on startup. For example, programs like "system" and "service host:..." sometimes take up 100% of my Disk for a few minutes after startup.

Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I have to resort to a complete system wipe :(
Is this possibly a hardware issue from carrying my laptop around all day (college student)?

Lastly, I got a blue screen of death earlier today while browsing the web.

Solution
Hi there Prince Aladdin,

You can start with troubleshooting your HDD. You can disable several Windows Services like: Windows Search, Superfetch, BITS. Check this out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2027511/windows-disk-usage-100-problem.html
In case the issue persists, you can test your drive with a brand specific testing tool. In case the results show that there is something wrong with the drive, you need to back up the data stored on it.

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply. I did exactly as you said. The disk drive check came back all clear. Any other suggestions?

I ran a Malwarebytes Scan with the results shown below. I am reluctant to delete these files. How do I know if these 'detected' files are critical computer components and if I delete them, how can I be sure my computer will function normally?

I ran it in safe mode. The problem was significantly reduced, though I am reluctant to say it was completely gone. Significantly better nonetheless. What do you think this means?

When I came back to regular mode, I got a blue screen of death while looking at the task manager (no other programs running).

I will run the RAM test right now.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate your time.

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart, we're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you."

If you would like to know more, you can search online later for this error: DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL (Smb_driver_Intel.sys)"

Either I am really bad at tech or that program is no longer functional. I get an error that said that it failed to boot from the USB that I have the program on. I have 16gb of RAM though, so I can't see RAM being an issue.
