Hi, I have had my PC for a couple of years and have recently been having an issue with the case fan. Whenever I first start my PC after a few hours of sitting idle, it makes this whirring/grinding sound for about a minute then stops completely. I have read about it possibly being a bearing or a cable hitting the fan, however, I am unsure. I know it is definitely the case fan you can see in the video, but I just don't know the cause. I would rather not replaced it but it seems like the only option at the moment. Here is the video:

Greetings WillR27!

There's not much to think about. Your fan is a toast. Please replace it asap. I recommend Noctua fans, but their a bit pricey, You can also go for Noctua Redux, which are cheap, and don't have a competition!

Thanks for the reply, I had a feeling there was not much I could do about it, just wanted to double check. It is an 80mm fan so I will do some research and see what I can find.

Well, it needs to be 80x15mm as I have a Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced which has limited space down the side so can't fit anything bigger. I am not on a strict budget so anywhere from £5 - £10 ($8 - $15) is fine, I just don't know exactly what I am looking for and am struggling to find many fans that size at all Thanks in advance though :)

Sorry, it needs to be 80mm x15mm not 120mm as it is the small case fan on the side of the case which sort of sits adjacent to the motherboard and below the power supply where there is not much room at all. I just don't seem to be able to find many 80mm x 15mm fans at all. Here is a good image:

I think I might go for the Silenx 24 cfm iXtrema Pro fan, it looks like it will be better in every way than my current one (if it wasn't dead). Thanks again for the help, I do appreciate it :)

Just in case anyone is curious, I have given the fan another clean and hooked it back up and it seems as though it is fixed. I will still be replacing it though as it is still not the greatest fan in the world.

WillR27 - cleaning a fan without a source of 4-6 bar of air pressure is kind of tricky. In order to get this air pressure, You need either a dentist's pressure gun, or a modeller air compressor. With mere air duster, which blows tops somewhere around 1 bar, You'll clean "most" of the stuff, but the stuff that's burned in simply won't budge. Or at least not for some time :) Also, overnipping the fan with high air pressure many times help the fan, and sometimes kills it. E.g. if the fan is dimensioned for 3000 rpm tops, and with strong air pressure You whirl it up to 10 000 rpm, You may both, clean it, or kill it.
