Corsair Value select ram vs Corsair Vengeance ram?

Solution

Well that depends on the game if you are playing games that want to use more than 4gb of ram of course the 8gb will be much better but if...

This is the ram I'm using right now:

http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-4gb-single-module-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz4gx3m1a1600c9

and this is the value select one:

http://www.corsair.com/en/corsair-memory-8gb-ddr3-memory-cmv8gx3m1a1600c11

It will cost me $40 if I want another 4GB vengeance.

The second scenario is that I sell off this Vengeance for $35(a friend will buy) and I get this 8GB Value select for $65.

Is this upgrade worth it?

What will be the difference in gaming point of view?

Well that depends on the game if you are playing games that want to use more than 4gb of ram of course the 8gb will be much better but if the game uses less than 4gb it wont make any difference. The vengeance you have is Cas latency 9 which is slightly faster than the corsair value's cas latency 11 but i doubt you would ever notice that difference in gaming. So I would say if your on a budget sell the vengeance and get the 8gb stick, if not keep the 4gb stick and get another 4gb stick of the vengeance which would be better because it has a lower cas latency and 2x4gb is better than 1x8gb because 2x4gb will be in duel channel mode which can give you a nice performance increase in some games.

Really nice explanation somebody told me that 2x4gb should be only used when they come in the same packing.:/

I don't know. That doesn't make sense but somebody actually said that.

Sure in a perfect world. But if you get another stick of the vengeance that is the same specs as the stick you have i can almost guarantee it will be fine. I have gotten totally different sticks of ram with different specs working together no problem, so i dont think you should have a problem with ram that is made by the same company with the same specs.

Yeah obviously, I'll get the same make and model and all.

From what I've calculated, I should buy another vengeance :p

That's a better buy for me. :p

Also it's okay to buy RAM in used right?

Thats what i would do if i could afford it. Yes its probably okay to buy used, but try to get it from a reputable seller who has good reviews. You want to make sure they are shipping it in an anti static bag to keep static electricity out during shipping. And make sure they provide a detailed spec sheet so you can be sure your getting the right stick the important specs are, CAS 9 Timing: 9-9-9-24 Speed: 1600mhz Voltage: 1.5volts and DDR3 of course.

I guess the specs of both the vengeance CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9 would be the same. No?

Try looking through the forums, people mixing the same model of DRAM from different packages and it happens all the time, you can pull sticks right off the assembly line and they might not play. DRAM in a package is tested to play together. Also if you already have a stick and now get another, the new may be completely different memory ICs (chips), or even if same they may be from different production lots, binned different, even a change in solder or PCB can affect the electrical conductivity. I'm not saying they WON'T play, but letting you know at best it's a 50/50 crapshoot

True, just wanted you to know, we see folks all the time get told "Yeah just add another DIMM and it will be perfectly fine", when they have no idea at all about DRAM. I spend a lot of time here helping folks to try and get these mis-matched or mixed sticks working
