Possible PSU issues or Video Card?

Hello Everyone,

I recently got a new Mobo (ASRock z97 Pro4), CPU (i5-4960k), and a Case (Corsair Spec-02).

I used most of the components from my old computer to build this one.
Current build is
Mobo: ASRock z97 Pro4
CPU: i5-4960k
Graphics Card: R9-270X
8 GB ram
64 GB SSD
1 TB HDD
Optical Drive

I have a couple year old 500 Watt Rocketfish modular Power Supply( Yea I know sucks, I used to work at best buy and got it for like $15 bucks on discount. It worked fine on my previous build which was the same except for it had a 4-pin power phenom II x4 945 and different mobo (my new board/cpu required 8 pin)

The issue I am having is the computer will either not display anything, or when it does post it will randomly lock up in the OS.

Using dedicated graphics I could get it to post every time without an issue, I also used a video card that required no additional power and it worked fine too in the main pci-e slot. One weird thing I have found is when I put the r9-270x in the second PCI-E x16 (4x) slot it appears to work fine. ( Haven't done any major testing so it may also have the problem if it stays on for a while)

I am assuming it is a power issue because when I disconnected my optical drive and extra hard drive I am able to get it to turn on more consistently but it still will eventually lock up.

The only reason I am question this is because the only thing that has change between this current build and my old one is motherboard and cpu. I used to have an MSI board and a Phenom IIx4. I assumed Haswell would have been less power hungry, however it does use a 8 pin cpu power as opposed to a 4 pin.

Does power supply seem to be my issue?

Also worth noting. When the computer doesn't display anything at all on boot up, I am able to remote into the computer with remote desktop.

Correct, regarding monitor. Isn't my first rodeo ;) Yea, I am planning on replacing it regardless. Do you think that's what the issue is. I just assumed Haswell would have been less power hungry. I know it laptops that was it's main improvement. Is that not the case for desktops? I really don't want to drive an hour to Microcenter to get my board swapped.

Like tiny voices said, change out the PSU. When you start taking the load off the PSU, extra HHD/optical or a video card that doesn't need external power plugs and everything works fine, is a PSU issue. Spend the $60-$70 for a new PSU now or $700-$800 for a new build when it fails and takes items with it. I wouldn't even trust that thing to be a paperweight on my desk let alone power my computer.

So I replaced the power supply with Thermaltake 600W. Exact same thing happening. Unit does not display anything on monitor. However computer is booting up. I can teamview into the computer and it shows a problem with my r9 in device manager. This card worked fine before I put it in this computer, so the card should be good, however when I put another card in the same slot that card works fine. I am so pissed... what the heck is going on. (I haven't tried my r9 in another computer so the card could have failed, but like I said it worked in my old pc last night.)

....I do not, I saw that and had no idea what it was for. Hopefully thats it. What is the purpose for that. I saw molex and assumed it was for some legacy hardware.

From what I ready in manual thats only if you have more then 1 gpu...Should I still plug it in?

Some boards have them to feed extra power to the pci-x slots, I first ran across it on an Asus Rampage 3 Extreme board it had 2 right next to the slots. The manual even stated that they help feed power to the slots.

If you look at page 6 in your manual #28 point to the molex plug, on page 7 its says "PCIe Power Connector (PCIE_PWR1)" so it gives your slot more power.

Something still seems wrong, it shouldn't need that. I just plugged it in and I haven't had issues yet, but I have no faith in it. I am thinking it's a bad board. I am going to try a another video card tonight, but this is the worst luck I have had with a new pc build.

Yea, only one they had at Best Buy. Regardless it's better then the Rocketfish. I live in a dead spot of computer retailers. MicroCenter is an hour away and I don't feel like going back. I have been around computers enough to know there is another problem. It is either a bad mobo or my video card magically failed. I just don't under stand what is going on. I am currently running Prime95 and FurMark and it's been on for 20 minutes running, however I am sure when I am just browsing it will randomly fail on me again and I will have to hard reset computer.. I did plug in that molex adapter on board, but I shouldn't have to do that.

It says it's for if I have 2 or more graphics cards installed. I only have one and it's a midrange card. Nothing that should require crazy power. Not to mention this card worked fine on my old am3 board with the old psu and no goofy molex thing. It's been on with that molex plugged in for a while now, but I'm not holding my breath. I am also running prime95 and fur mark right now, what is weird is it seems to freeze when I am not doing anything demanding. I have a feeling it's going to freeze again. We will see.

Computer just froze again. Like I said before it was during non intensive work. I ran prime95 and Furmark at the same time for about 20 minutes with no issue, I stopped them and started doing Windows updates and sure enough it locked up. I will try my old GTX 560 Graphics card in it tonight and see what happens. I really hope it's the board. I can't afford to drop money on a new card. :( (On a side note, while taking the graphics card out 10 times last night troubleshooting, I cracked off the damn clip that holds the card in. Hopefully they won't give me crap when I return it)

So I put the R9 back into my old desktop...works fine from what I can tell. I also put my 560 into my new desktop...also seems to work fine. What I am gathering is that the only card that won't work in my new mobo is my r9-270x even though it works perfectly fine in my old desktop WTF....
